    A relic of one of Britain's worst shipping disasters, anonymously given to a BBC reporter last week, is to be put on display at Southampton's SeaCity Museum while its future is decided.

    The bell of the SS Mendi, which sank off the Isle of Wight in 1917, was left by arrangement in Swanage on Thursday.

    It is thought to have been stripped from the wreck by divers in the 1980s.

    The sinking claimed the lives of more than 600 black South African labourers who were sailing to support British troops in the First World War.

    Motorway

    The A34 will be closing southbound for planned road repairs between Oxford and Bicester each night this week, external.

    The route will be shut between 21.00 and 06.00.

    It will be open as usual on Saturday and Sunday nights before six further overnight closures next week.

    The route will also be closed northbound between the A415 and the A423, external from 21.00 to 06.00 this week, and again between 26 June and 1st July, before further overnight closures 3 July and 7 July.

    Lancashire because of the three quick wickets after a quiet opening 50 minutes.

    Hampshire because of a 46-run unbroken stand between James Vince and George Bailey in the aftermath.

    James Anderson although wicketless, bowled a six over opening spell in which he cruised through after his return from a groin tear.

    And Kyle Jarvis bowled nine overs on the bounce after a month out with fractured thumb.

  6. Homes planning meeting cancelledpublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 19 June 2017

    A meeting scheduled for tomorrow to consider plans to build homes on land in Abingdon has been cancelled after the Environment Agency asked for more time to consider its response.

    The application is for 900 homes and 50 retirement properties, external on land north of Dunmore Road and Twelve Acre Drive.

    Vale of White Horse District Council said a new date for the meeting would be announced soon.
