    One of Europe's oldest known great white egrets has returned to the same Hampshire nature reserve he has been visiting since 2003.

    The bird, nicknamed Walter by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, usually arrives at Blashford Lakes near Ringwood in August and leaves in February to return to France.

    Only around 35 great white egrets are known to spend their winters in the UK.

    Following the fire at Grenfell Tower, a major hospital in Oxford has decided to move trauma patients out of a building with external cladding, following a safety review.

    Professor Christopher Bulstrode, who used to work at the unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital has praised the decision telling Radio 4's World at One that patient safety must come first. "The last thing we want to have is a fire on a ward where patients are stuck in bed, that would be a catastrophe". He added "I think they have been very quick and very wise to take this action."

    A museum is trying to trace the origin of a mystery rock bearing a note from a staff member that suggests it could be a "lava bubble".

    The Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford has more than 500,000 objects that have been donated by explorers and anthropologists since it was founded in 1884.

    The note, written in the 1970s, reads: "I think this is a lava bubble - Bob."

    The museum tweeted: "Is Bob right? Any lava bubble experts out there?" A spokeswoman said Bob worked at the museum in the 1970s so the stone and its note have been sitting on a shelf at least since then.

    She added: "We don't actually know what that object was used for and it is sitting in the Pitt Rivers stores."

    A woman has been arrested after a 31-year-old man was stabbed in the arm, external and leg in Blackbird Leys.

    Police said a number of people attacked the man and officers were called to Crowberry Road at 21:55 on Monday.

    He remains in hospital with "serious injuries" and Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses.

    The woman is from Oxford and was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm. She is in police custody.

    Work to repair a lifting bridge in Dorset will not be complete until the end of October - nearly five months later than originally planned.

    Poole Bridge closed on 12 September 2016, with work initially predicted to take nine months, but "challenges" pushed the opening date back to September.

    Now Borough of Poole Council said it was "clear" the £4.2m overhaul would not be completed in September either.

    A spokesman said contractors would be working weekends and extended hours to minimise disruption.

    A father who was jailed for abducting his children has been imprisoned again for failing to return them to the UK.

    Usama Al Barwani, from Portsmouth, took his daughter, Aishah, now 12, and his son, Faris, nine, to Oman in 2012.

    The High Court heard their "desperate" mother, Lacey Plato, had campaigned for five years to be reunited with them.

    Jailing Al Barwani for a year, Mrs Justice Theis said it was hard to think of "a more damaging and harmful act for a parent to do to his children."

    A woman has died from her injuries five days after a car crash in Berkshire.

    Emergency services were called to the collision between a Nissan Qashqai and Vauxhall Corsa on the A308 Marlow Road near Maidenhead on Wednesday.

    The driver of the Nissan - a 38-year-old woman - was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died in hospital on Monday.

    No arrests have been made in connection with the crash.

    A man has been banned from Christchurch in Dorset for five years.

    Stephen Gadd, 52, of no fixed address, is also barred from using disabled toilets in the county and harassing members of the public.

    It follows a string of incidents when he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly towards a church support group which was helping him in Highcliffe last year.

    Gadd was handed the Criminal Behaviour Order by Poole Magistrates last month.

    Geography books belonging to four girls in the 1880s have been reunited with their descendents.

    The two bound titles dating back to 1888 were bought by a collector at a book stall in Oxfordshire.

    They feature delicate pencil drawings and homework exercises within the pages, with the names Ada, Lucy, Ethel and Lily Dobel inscribed inside.

    Lucy's grandson David Newton, from Tring, in Hertfordshire, was traced and the books have been given to him.

    Bournemouth winger Connor Mahoney wants to make his Premier League debut as quick as he can as he settles into life with the top-flight club.

    The 20-year-old former Blackburn player joined the Cherries in July, initially as part of the under-23 squad.

    But following a pre-season appearance against Valencia, Mahoney is hungry for a chance in Eddie Howe's senior side.

    "I've always wanted to play in the Premier League - once I've ticked that off, I can make new goals," he said.
