    Cigarettes worth £4,000 were stolen during an overnight raid of a petrol station.

    Police have released CCTV images of two people they want to speak to in connection with the break-in at the BP garage in Prospect Road, Farnborough.

    Hampshire Constabulary said the burglary happened at about 03:40 BST on Monday.

    The offenders are believed to have been driving a small white hatchback.

    Christchurch Borough Council is considering joining a committee set up to discuss a planned merger of Dorset's councils, despite being opposed to it.

    In January, councillors voted against forming a unitary authority with Bournemouth and Poole in a proposed reorganisation of local government.

    Councillors are considering joining the committee to influence the plans and protect their voting rights.

    A decision will be taken at a special meeting on Tuesday next week.

  4. Computer glitch causes Cherwell double council tax billpublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    About 4,400 people in Oxfordshire will be charged double for their council tax this month because of a computer glitch.

    New software has been installed by Cherwell District Council and caused payments not to be taken in July.

    As a result two payments will be taken on 9 August. The council has written to affected residents affected and set up a dedicated phone line for anyone who wants to make a one-off payment now.

    A spokesman said: "Cherwell District Council's revenues and benefits department has recently changed its software system.

    "In the course of the switchover to the new system a technical issue meant that direct debit payments for residents who normally pay on the ninth of the month were not claimed."

    A "mystery person" is believed to be posing as a local authority tree surgeon to cut down a town's mature oaks and willows, a council has said.

    Slough council has issued a warning to residents after six "substantial" trees were felled in Upton Court Park.

    The authority said a chainsaw had been used and the damage was not caused by "some kids mucking about".

    Police should be called if anyone is seen felling trees in the park, a council spokesperson said.

    Residents in east Oxford say they have been finding large numbers of discarded hypodermic needles.

    The needles have been discovered in gardens and playground areas, prompting a public meetnig to discuss the area's drug problems.

    Oxford City Council said anyone who finds needles should contact the authority, so specially-trained officers can dispose of them safely.

    This video shows a water spout whipped up by the wind over the Dorset coast.

    The swilling mass of water was created by a tornado over the sea off Weymouth this morning.

    A cyclist was punched to the ground and hit "multiple times" during an assault in Reading, police have said.

    The 29-year-old man had been riding along New Lane Hill in the moments before the attack at about 18:15 BST on Saturday.

    The offender left the scene when a passer-by came to the aid of the injured man.

    Thames Valley Police said the attacker, described as an Asian man in his early 30s, had been a passenger in a car travelling behind the victim.

    The victim suffered bruising to his face but did not require hospital treatment.
