    There are now no CrossCountry trains between Birmingham New Street and several main cities in the UK, due to the wintry weather., external

    The operator says there's no service between the Midlands city and Cardiff or the South West.

    There's also no service to Southampton or Bournemouth beyond Reading.

    It adds that there's a reduced service to Newcastle Upon Tyne and an hourly one to Manchester.

    Hundreds of schools across the South are closed today but some are bucking the trend.

    The Tree House School in Cholsey is open despite the ice and snow.

    Headteacher, Lee Ryman, says: "We've very lucky because our school is in Cholsey...and all of the children here live in the village too so it's not a problem for us.

    She told BBC Radio Oxford that pupils were pleased with the decision....do we believe her?

    The chief nurse for Hampshire hospitals has called for any off duty staff living near to its Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester to walk in and help.

    Donna Green said: "We've suffered with the snow in Winchester.

    "Our staff have done an amazing job and many have stayed overnight to help.

    "But we are looking to give some people respite so we'd like as many hands on deck as possible."

    Earlier we told you South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) had appealed for 4x4 drivers to help its staff get to work.

    Well it seems some have already answered the call and its posted on its Twitter feed to say thanks.

    It adds that anyone else who can help their crews should email cfr@scas.nhs.uk with vehicle details, a contact number, and their availability.

    A bus on the Isle Of Wight has got stuck in Sandown, at the junction of Fitsroy Street and Melville Road.

    Brian Rushton, who sent in the photo, said the Southern Vectis bus got jammed "after sliding down icy roads which the local authority failed to grit".

    Dorset County Council reports that in the last 24 hours its snow clearing team has used 1,000 tonnes of salt on 25 lorries with 100 operators on 12 hour shifts.

    A spokesman said: "Don't worry we have plenty of salt to see us through".

    Today the team are working on community link roads and then back onto priority roads.

    Snow drifts are causing problems on several rural roads across the South, including the A44.

    The lights are back on in Winchester, Stanmore and Olivers Battery.

    Scottish and Southern Electricity networks says supplies were restored at about 07:00 GMT.

    Overnight its engineers worked to restore power in Radley, Abingdon and Kennington after outages last night.

    There is a yellow snow and ice warning for the whole of the South today. Further bands of snow will move northwards across the South bringing some accumulations.

    Tomorrow the warning is for ice.

    Freezing rain (it doesn’t happen that often) fell in some places along the coast last night. Reports of it came from Bournemouth Airport and Swanage.

    It has caused black ice and very dangerous conditions.

    Pearce Williams, 19, from Sherborne, has been stranded in Yeovil since finishing work at about 14:45 GMT yesterday.

    He said: "It took me 45 minutes to travel one mile from Screwfix to Lurton Way - the traffic was awful.

    "It took me a further hour and 15 minutes to get to the hospital roundabout, where cars were being left as they were stuck and couldn't move - they were sliding and getting stuck.

    “The traffic came to a standstill so I turned around and went back to a friend’s house as it was too dangerous and I wouldn't have made it home with the amount of ice and snow that there was.”
