    An ambulance service is asking any 4x4 owner who can help staff get to work to get in touch.

    South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) says those able to assist should email with vehicle details, a contact number, and their availability.

    SCAS covers Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Hampshire and says it will need help throughout the day.

    On the edge of our region, the M40 is now open south and northbound but only one lane is operating in each direction.

    Highways England is still advising people to delay non essential travel.

    It’s blowing a hooley here in Sherborne.

    Although the snow has now stopped, there has been about 11cm with several feet in some areas where it has drifted.

    The flakes have also left icy-patterns on the windows.

    Once powdery the white stuff has now frozen making driving and walking conditions somewhat hazardous.

    Although it might look pretty, the biting, bitter gusts of wind are certainly making it feel colder than the -3C registering on the thermometer.

    In a statement after three trains were stuck overnight around Christchurch, South Western Railway said it "sincerely" apologised "to all those who have been on trains overnight".

    "We are working hard to get people home and are in the process of detraining passengers from those trains.

    "A train is on its way as we speak to pick up the passengers who are currently on the train near Christchurch. This train will arrive shortly.

    "Passengers will be taken to Bournemouth station where we have staff waiting to give them hot food and drinks."

    Passengers stuck on trains in Dorset are now being rescued after spending the night without heating, food or water.

    A number of trains were stuck on the line from Waterloo to Weymouth after running out of power following ice on the conductor rail.

    Harold Hanna, from Barton on Sea, was stuck on the line between Sway and New Milton in Dorset overnight and told BBC Radio Solent a rescue train had arrived.

    He said that despite the freezing conditions there was a "Dunkirk spirit" among the passengers.

    South Western Railway says its dealing with "multiple broken-down trains" between Weymouth and Southampton.

    It says passengers are advised not to travel between the cities and there are no trains running between Weymouth and Bournemouth.

    It means all services between Weymouth and London are starting and ending at Bournemouth.

    Trains between Salisbury and London are also cancelled and Island Line trains are not running.

    The A35 was closed but has now reopened

    Around 100 vehicles were stuck on the A35 in Dorset last night.

    The Puddletown bypass was closed while emergency services and snow ploughs tried to free the cars, with one driver reporting that "an avalanche of snow" was blocking the road.

    There were also reports of people walking home between Weymouth and Dorchester, with conditions on the A354 particularly treacherous.

    Ch Insp Alan Setchell of Dorset Police, said: "We have a number of major routes and other roads affected by the severe weather around the county and I would urge members of the public to avoid travelling if it is at all possible.”

    The A35 has now reopened.

  11. Stuck in train: 'No water and no heating for 13 hours'published at 07:27 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    Hundreds of passengers have been stuck overnight on a South Western Railways train with no water or heating.

    The train left Waterloo station in London at around 18:00 GMT yesterday but ground to a halt at various points along the track, and became stuck between Christchurch and Hinton Admiral in Dorset overnight.

    Passenger Robert Luther said: "We've been pretty cold these past 13 hours.

    "Luckily a lot of us had some winter clothing, it looks like we're all going on a skiing trip."

    Mr Luther added: "We've not had fresh water since 20:00 last night. "One guy had a packet of biscuits which he shared round but that went pretty quickly.

    "The toilet pans are full up, you can't get off the train either.

    "The train guard has been doing his best but he hasn't been getting any info from control."

    South Western Railways reported that a rescue train was on its way, but Mr Luther said there has been no sign of that yet.

    No planes are currently taking off or landing at Southampton Airport, but it is hoping to open within the hour once snow and ice has been cleared.

    Oxford Bus Company says some employees have struggled to get into work this morning because of the weather.

    Nonetheless it is intending to run the "best possible service" and has asked passengers to keep an eye on its Twitter feed , externalfor updates.

    Stagecoach Oxford is listing the latest news on its services on its website, external.

    Currently an number of services including the S1, S2, 6, 7, and 488 are unable to run so have been cancelled.

    Chiltern Railways has cancelled services between Oxford and Oxford Parkway today.

    It says it's unlikely there will be a rail replacement service and has apologised for any inconvenience.

    Fire crews from Oxfordshire have been at to two separate crashes involving lorries on the M40.

    Highways England says the route is currently shut between J14 Leamington Spa and J12 Gaydon, after an HGV hit the central reservation.
