  15. No new frigates for Portsmouth - MoD announcespublished at 12:22 British Summer Time 8 October 2018

    Peter Henley
    Political editor, South of England

The Type 26s, which are being introduced over the next decade, will all have Plymouth as their home port.

There will be disappointment in Portsmouth that none of these eight new frigates will come to the home of the Royal Navy, especially after the loss of navy shipbuilding in the dockyard.

    Gavin Williamson
    Image caption,

Gavin Williamson made the announcement from the deck of HMS Montrose

But there are sound strategic and political decisions to choose Plymouth instead.

It makes sense to meet the technical challenge of servicing a smaller number of increasingly sophisticated ships in one place.

And after Labour won Plymouth council on the back of a campaign to win more naval work, a Conservative defence secretary is keen to show the government's commitment to the city.

Portsmouth will be pretty busy anyway, coping with the work around the new aircraft carriers.
