    Herefordshire is hosting its first major conference on defence and security today, with local businesses meeting speakers from the armed forces to see if they can work better together. 

    As well as currently having 9,500 troops based in the county, Herefordshire has historic links to the defence industry.

    Defence & Security Expo  2017 is taking place at The Courtyard in Hereford.

  3. Inquest into student's death in terror attackpublished at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2017

    Evidence relating to the death of the University of Worcester student Joel Richards, who was shot by an Islamist gunman at a Tunisian resort in 2015, will be heard at an inquest today. 

    In total, 30 British holidaymakers were killed in the attack on a beach near Sousse, including Joel's grandfather and uncle.

  10. Appeal for witnesses over Belbroughton crashpublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    A man has been left with a serious leg wound after being hit on the forecourt of a service station, external on the A491 in Belbroughton, police say. 

    The injured man was standing behind a Nissan Novara when he was hit by the trailer of a vehicle as it left without paying for fuel.

    He was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch for treatment.

    The incident happened at about 19:00 on 20 January.

  12. Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust given deadline to improve by CQCpublished at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    A hospital trust has been given a six-week deadline to make significant improvements after being issued with a warning notice by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

    Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which has been in special measures since 2015, confirmed it had received a letter on 27 January.

    Staff were emailed about the notice on Tuesday, and meetings have been planned for later this week.

  13. Hereford racing 'should go ahead as planned despite weather'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Officials at Hereford racecourse are confident their scheduled meeting on Wednesday will go ahead as planned.

    Heavy rain is forecast overnight on Tuesday but the course’s executive director, Rebecca Davies, says the track has always drained well and so this will not be an issue.

    It's been confirmed that Worcester will be holding its first half-marathon in September this year, and helping to get things up and running this morning was former 1,500m world champion and Olympic silver-medallist Steve Cram.

    He came down to Perdiswell Leisure Centre to help promote the event. It doesn't look like he'd be running far in those jeans though...

  15. Over 180 imitation firearms and stun guns recovered by policepublished at 16:33 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    West Mercia police say 165 imitation firearms and 16 stun guns have either been seized or handed in over the last three years.

    The force has also revealed, external it made 26 arrests for offences involving imitation guns and 24 arrests for those involving stun guns, between January 2014 and December 2016.

    Over the same period, 3,786 firearms were either handed in to the police in West Mercia or seized by officers, with roughly three quarters of them recovered in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, the rest in Shropshire.
