  5. A pear tree for Worcester's 'canary girls'published at 17:54 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

    Nicola Goodwin
    Reporter, BBC Hereford & Worcester

A black pear tree has been planted at County Hall in Worcester in honour of the men and women who worked at the city's Blackpole munitions factory during the two world wars.

Two former workers at the bullet plant, Kathleen Halford and Kathleen Smith attended the ceremony which also saw a plaque put up beside the tree.

The skin of many of the women turned yellow as a result of working with trinitrotoluene - more commonly known as TNT, which is why they were called "canary girls".

About a million women worked at thousands of Ministry of Munitions sites during both world wars, but how many died remains a mystery.

A campaign led by BBC Hereford and Worcester hopes to see records of how many workers died released, as well as to cement the place of munitions workers in war history.

  18. HGVs face longest detour during A49 workspublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

Work at Onibury railway crossing this summer will lead to a 60-mile diversion, according to an official route.

While local drivers will no doubt find their own way around the works, it's a different matter for heavy goods vehicles which can't use many of the same back roads - which the official diversion has to bear in mind.

A large lorry heading from Ludlow or Leominster to Craven Arms or Church Stretton (or vice versa) faces the biggest detour we think.
