Worcestershire drew their County Championship match at Cheltenham yesterday, taking 11 points from the game.

He says they should have declared earlier, after they left Worcestershire over seven runs an over for victory.

    Quote Message

It seemed as though Gloucestershire wanted it all ways. They wanted to get as many runs as they could, quickly in the end after a boring start, and then try to bowl us out in a short space of time."

  14. The mystery of the 'no food' landladypublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

Memories of a lost love may explain why the landlady at a historic pub in Worcestershire broke her life-long refusal to serve any kind of food on only one day of the year.

The Fleece Inn at Bretforton, near Evesham, Worcestershire, was left to the National Trust by landlady Lola Taplin, whose family had owned the building for more than five-and-a-half centuries.

For more than 30 years she refused to serve any food at all in the pub, not even crisps or nuts, except at the annual reunion of former soldiers from the Green Howards infantry regiment (pictured).

The licencee who now runs the pub for National Trust, Nigel Smith, says the local historical society records show the regiment was based nearby from September 1939 to January 1940.

He believes a personal tragedy may be the reason Lola broke her "no food" rule.

    Quote Message

The Fleece became [the Green Jacket's] favourite pub and so, after World War Two was over, they used to have regular reunions there. Lola may also have wanted to make the occasion special for them in memory of her own sweetheart who is believed to have been killed in France during World War One.”

The Fleece was originally built as a peasant farmhouse in the early 1400s and did not become a pub until 1848 when a downturn in agriculture forced the family to look for other ways of earning a living.

It was the first single pub to be owned by the National Trust.

The 40th anniversary of the death of Lola Taplin, at the age of 83, will be marked at The Fleece on 15 July.
