    Shropshire Council said it started work this morning at 05:00 to try and clear Smithfield Road and is aiming to reopen it by 09:00.

    Dozens of residents in parts of Shropshire are starting today away from their homes after being evacuated over fears of rising floodwater.

    People in houses along the River Severn in Ironbridge and Bridgnorth were moved yesterday as water levels rose.

    Carol Calcutt lives across the river in Jackfield and told BBC Shropshire about the impact of the flooding.

    "It's unearthed all sorts of things round by us, I mean we've even had a floating table in the water in front of us this morning but the smell is vile and I dread what's coming in terms of clean-up," she said.

    While in Shrewsbury, West Mercia Police is continuing to warn drivers not to move road closure signs from flooded routes.

    The River Severn has continued to reach high peaks during the flooding, according to the Environment Agency.

    Manager Dave Throup tweeted , externalthey'd recorded the level at its highest since December 2000 in Bewdley overnight, with the water just 15cm from the top of flood defences in places.

    Local community spirit has been praised, including in Upton upon Severn where two local children baked biscuits, external and took them out to "everyone who's helping".

    People in places worst affected by flooding in the West Midlands are being warned more heavy rain is expected.

    Nearly 150 flood warnings are still in place, including six severe, external - or "danger to life" - warnings, mainly along the rivers Severn and Wye through Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

    In Shropshire, river levels peaked overnight in Ironbridge and Bridgnorth and started to fall.

    Homes along the River Severn were evacuated yesterday and there were fears from the Environment Agency that flood defences could be overwhelmed.

    One lane has been closed along Underhill Street in Bridgnorth this evening due to the the rising River Severn.

    Shropshire Council said it was a precautionary measure, but with levels expected to peak at up to 5.3m (17.3ft) overnight the lane closure could remain until the morning.

  13. Fraudsters target victims of floodingpublished at 18:38 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2020

    It appears fraudsters may be targeting flood victims in an attempt to steal bank details.

    West Mercia Police said it was aware of suspicious Facebook posts purporting to be from banks, directed at flood victims, and offering to replace cards or money lost in the floods.

    People are being warned to be vigilant and only talk to their banks or insurance companies directly.

    There are flood warnings right along the length of the River Severn , externalthrough Shropshire and Worcestershire this evening.

    The Environment Agency also has flood warnings covering the rivers Wye and Trent and severe flood warnings for Upton upon Severn, Ironbridge and Hampton Bishop.

    Sandbags are being offered to people living near the River Severn in Bridgnorth this evening.

    A supply has been placed near the junction of Cartway and Riverside so that residents can help themselves.

    The council has been visiting those homes this evening and reported some already have their own sandbags and flood barriers.

  17. Flood water expected to breach barriers in townpublished at 18:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2020

    The Beales Corner flood barrier in Bewdley is expected to be breached tonight, with the River Severn either coming over the top or around the side.

    The local MP, Mark Garnier, tweeted a warning to people living alongside the river, with this photo.

    The Environment Agency said the river is due to peak there at around 5.4m, external (17.7ft) overnight, and as a result properties on Beales Corner, Severnside South and Kidderminster Road are likely to be affected.

    It will also cause problems for traffic in the town and for motorists using the A456.

  19. 'You've got to keep going with a smile on your face'published at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2020

    Shopkeepers in the Longden Coleham area of Shrewsbury have been doing their best to protect their stock during the flooding.

    Susan Newman, who runs a shop near the Greyfriars bridge, said the community had been "amazing" and shopkeepers had been "keeping each other going".
