    The chair of the group behind £70bn plans to improve transport links in the North says it's the first time organisations are working with "one voice" to bring investment to the region.

    A 30-year strategy to improve road and rail links between cities in the north of England has been unveiled in Hull today.

    The plan was met with criticism in Hull from the former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, who claimed the organisation behind the plans, Transport for the North (TfN), doesn't have the powers necessary to bring about the improvements.

    But TfN's chairman, John Cridland, said: "For the first time, civic and business leaders and transport operators are speaking with one voice on transport to make sure the North fulfils its potential."

  6. Scunthorpe man charged over M3 lorry crashpublished at 17:08

    A man from Scunthorpe has been charged after a lorry carrying 20 tonnes of paper overturned, forcing a partial closure of the M3 in Hampshire.

    The vehicle also shed about 32 gallons (150 litres) of diesel on the southbound road near junction 12 at Eastleigh on Sunday night. A crash barrier was also damaged.

    The man, 50, is in custody accused of driving without due care and attention and failing to provide a specimen and is due before Southampton magistrates.

    More than 160 Syrian refugees have been given sanctuary in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire over the past two-and-a-half years, it's emerged.

    East Yorkshire has taken the highest number, with 72 people coming to live in the area.

    Mohamad Abdeil Wahab (pictured) and his family have settled in Scunthorpe after fleeing Syria and travelling to Turkey.

    Transport bosses have been in Hull today to unveil a £70bn plan for improving roads and railways across the north of England today.

    The 30-year plan includes creating a new rail network, called Northern Powerhouse Rail, which it's claimed would improve links between Hull, Leeds and Manchester:

    Not everyone was impressed with the plans, though, as former Hull MP and ex-Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott made a sudden exit from the launch event in Hull, branding it a "bloody fraud".

    Transport for the North, which is made up of politicians and business leaders, said the developments, external could help create 850,000 jobs and boost the economy by £100bn.

  11. Patient transport service is 'getting better'published at 15:06 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2018

    As MPs prepare to debate issues with the non-emergency patient transport service in Hull and Lincolnshire, the company behind the service says it is improving.

    There have been complaints that Thames Ambulance Service has failed to pick some patients up on time, meaning they have missed appointments, while others have been left stranded in hospital.

    Brigg and Goole Conservative MP Andrew Percy is due to hold a debate on the issue in the Commons later.

    Police are still on the scene here in Southburn, near Driffield, this afternoon following the murder of a man in a suspected crossbow attack.

    Shane Gilmer died after being found injured at his home on Friday night.

    The suspected killer, Anthony Lawrence, was found dead in a camper van parked in a lay-by in the North York Moors on Sunday.

    A £10m University Technical College (UTC) in Hull has had more applications for its courses than the number of places it has available for the next academic year.

    The Ron Dearing UTC, which specialises in science, technology and engineering for students aged between 14 and 19 years old, opened in September.

    The college says it has received 325 applications and has 230 places available.

    Tributes have been paid to a man who was killed in a suspected crossbow attack at a house near Driffield in East Yorkshire.

    Shane Gilmer (pictured) died after being found injured at the house on Friday.

    His pregnant girlfriend, Laura Sugden, was also injured, but is said to be in a stable condition.

    Mr Gilmer has been described as "a great man" by Ms Sugden's cousin, Toby Miles.

    He worked as a housing manager for East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

    The authority said it was "flying flags at half-mast as a mark of respect for Shane" and it had arranged for a book of condolence to be opened for staff to pay tribute.

    Suspect Anthony Lawrence, 55, was found dead in a camper van parked in a lay-by in the North York Moors on Sunday.

    An attack in Grimsby which left a man dead is an "isolated incident", according to Humberside Police.

    The 47-year-old victim died in hospital today following an assault outside a bank on Old Market Place yesterday afternoon.

    Det Insp Stewart Miller says: "At the current time we believe this was an isolated incident and there is no risk to the wider community.

    "Our initial investigations have led us to believe this attack was not targeted at any specific section of the community and we will be increasing patrols in the area."

    A murder investigation has been launched in Grimsby following a fatal attack on a 47-year-old man.

    Humberside Police say the man was found injured on the pavement outside a bank on Old Market Place yesterday afternoon.

    He was taken to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital for treatment, where he died this morning.

    Police say they are hunting for a man aged 20-45 with dark-rimmed glasses, wearing a beige or grey jacket with a peaked hood.

    There's been controversy at the launch event for the 30-year Public Transport Plan for the North, in Hull this morning.

    John Prescott, the former Hull Labour MP and ex-time Deputy Prime Minister, has stormed out of the Transport for North meeting in Hull, labelling it "a bloody fraud with no powers".

    The event, at Alexandra Dock, is one of a series of launch events being held today.

    The organisation, which is made up of politicians and business leaders, says the 30-year plan is part of proposals to "drive economic growth by transforming travel across the north of England".
