    People in Cottingham in East Yorkshire have voted in favour of a neighbourhood plan.

    In a referendum held yesterday, 95% supported the plan which would allow them to protect their village from developments that don't meet certain guidelines.

    The parish council says the turnout was 25%.

    Hull City play Premier League giants Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup fifth round this evening.

    The Tigers come into the contest on the back of a 2-1 fourth round win over Arsenal's conquerors Nottingham Forest.

    They'll be without a trio of defenders on loan from Chelsea - Michael Hector, Ola Aina and Fikayo Tomori - who are ineligible to face their parent club.

    Manager Nigel Adkins (pictured) says the team must give themselves every opportunity to get through the tie and not throw the towel in.

    Yorkshire is celebrating the Chinese New Year with news of a huge increase in the number of Chinese visitors to the county.

    Research by Visit Britain shows visitor figures from China have more than doubled in recent years.

    Yorkshire played host to almost 20,000 visitors from China in 2016, compared to 9,000 who chose it as a holiday destination in 2012.

    The city of York is one of several destinations which has benefited, according to Visit Britain.

  5. New phase of A614 work to get under waypublished at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2018

    Drivers are being warned that the second phase of major roadworks on the A614 in East Yorkshire is due to begin next week.

    It'll include kerb, drainage replacement and resurfacing work, starting at the mini roundabout at Holme on Spalding Moor and working southwards.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council has apologised for the likely disruptions, and says signs have been put up to provide motorists information on diversions and expected delays.

    The £600,000 scheme to improve the A614 is set to be completed by July 2018.

    The number of miles travelled by public buses across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire has fallen by over 10% in the last decade,according to a BBC investigation.

    It's claimed the reduction is largely down to a cut in council subsidies and that in Lincolnshire, the bus network has shrunk back to what it was in the late 1980s.

    However, the government says it's investing £250m a year to support routes.

  9. Cracking the whip on Yorkshire's tardy builderspublished at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2018

    Nearly 30,000 homes are waiting to be built across Yorkshire long after developers were given planning permission, according to a new study.

    The Local Government Association (LGA) says there are 28,500 uncompleted house builds in the region.

    The figures show it now takes 40 months on average from schemes receiving planning permission to building work being completed – eight months longer than in 2013-14.

    The LGA is now calling for new powers for local authorities to punish tardy builders, such as charging them council tax for every unbuilt property.

    One of Hull's most important live music venues has had its long-term future secured.

    The Adelphi Club, on De Grey Street, has hosted some of the biggest names in music over the past 34 years.

    It will now become a Community Interest Company with musicians like Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Housemartins singer Paul Heaton becoming patrons.

    Those involved say it will allow the club to bid for funding grants for the first time.

  12. Popular Driffield footpath could be re-opened soonpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2018

    People living in part of Driffield in East Yorkshire could soon be able to use a popular footpath once more.

    The path connects the Mount with Greenways, but a big fence was built across it while new bungalows were under construction.

    East Riding Council believes the fence is owned by the housebuilder Quintor Homes and has written to the company asking them remove it by the end of this month.

    Private wardens are being brought in across North East Lincolnshire to tackle irresponsible dog owners who don't clean up after their pets.

    The authority says it'll mean their staff can focus on more serious problems like fly-tipping and rogue traders.

    The wardens will work seven days a week handing out fines to people who let their dogs foul in public places, without picking up after them.

    A High Court judge has ordered UKIP to pay some of the legal costs for the Yorkshire MEP Jane Collins over a libel case against her.

    Jane Collins was successfully sued for libel by Rotherham's three Labour MPs.

    It's not clear how much of the £670,000 bill the party will have to pay.

    Mr Justice Warby said UKIP, for party political reasons, deliberately held up the settlement of the High Court defamation case until after the 2015 general election.

    The RMT union has announced there's to be another 24-hour strike on Northern Rail on Saturday 3 March.

    It's part of an ongoing dispute over the role of the guard and driver-only operation.

    Workers on Northern Rail will strike on 3 March in the long-running dispute over the role of guards, the Rail, Maritime and Transport union has announced.

    The Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, councillor Rob Waltham, has met with rail bosses over plans to run a direct service between London and the region.

    The current proposals are for trains from London to travel to Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Cleethorpes. The group also discussed the possibility of adding further stops in North Lincolnshire including the Isle of Axholme at Crowle, and at Barnetby.

    Cllr Waltham, pledged his support to an application from Grand Central to the Rail Regulator for access to the line and if the bid is successful, the services could start running in 2020.

    Forty bell-ringers are travelling by coach to Leicestershire to see two new bells cast for St Mary's church in Beverley.

    The bells, together with a third one being cast next month, will be installed in May.

    Chris Munday, the Ringing Master at St Mary's, says the arrival of the new bells will be a big boost for bell-ringing in East Yorkshire.
