    People living in Scunthorpe fear more green space in the town could be lost if plans to sell a former playing field for housing is given the go-ahead.

    North Lincolnshire Council wants to sell off the land near the town's Quibell Park athletics track.

    So far, a petition against the sale has attracted nearly 2,000 signatures.

    The council says the decision to put up the site for sale was made because it currently owns too much green space.

    Hull University has beaten Oxford and Cambridge to the top of the league for admitting a balanced intake of rich and poor students.

    Universities like Cambridge, St Andrews, Bristol and Oxford were placed near the bottom of the table published today by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), external.

    Nick Hillman, director of HEPI, says: "This analysis reveals which universities reflect our society best and those which have further to travel."

    Mr Hillman added that learning outcomes were better when students from diverse backgrounds studied alongside each other.

    A Scunthorpe shopkeeper has been convicted of selling counterfeit tobacco and given a 12-month community order.

    Milan Muhammed, of Smiths Convenience Store on Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe, pleaded guilty to 12 offences relating to the sale of counterfeit tobacco and tobacco labelling offences.

    In total, 892 packets of cigarettes and 6.25kg of hand rolling tobacco with a street value of around £3,300 were seized during an operation by a trading standards team in 2017.

    Muhammed, was given a 12-month Community Order with the requirement to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

    He was also ordered to pay £610 costs and £85 victim surcharge.

    The family of a dementia sufferer who was abused in a Beverley care home has said her legacy should ensure better care for others.

    Freda Jobson died on Easter Monday aged 87.

    Her relatives had secretly filmed staff who were employed to care for her at Keldgate Manor Home in 2015 taunting and maltreating her.

    Her daughter Maddy says she believes the general standard of care will have improved as a result of her mum's treatment being highlighted in the media and says she knows it has been used in training too.

    The Humberside Police force has responded to a report by government inspectors that found the force was slow to act in protecting some vulnerable children.

    In a statement Humberside Police says it is pleased the report recognises the commitment to making improvements in how it protects children.

    The forces says investment has been put into how they work with partner agencies and it is working at improving the service to local communities.

    An well-known building in North East Lincolnshire could be put on the market.

    The Grade-II listed Welholme Galleries building in Grimsby closed as a museum back in 2004.

    Next week North East Lincolnshire Council will look at proposals to dispose of the freehold on the building.

    There had been plans to turn it into a 250 seat theatre, but they did not proceed.

    A body created to overhaul transport in northern England is to meet for the first time as it takes up new powers.

    Transport for the North (TfN) will hold its first board meeting in Liverpool with Transport Minister Jo Johnson.

    TfN will advise the government on transport strategy and enact a 30-year road and railway upgrade scheme unveiled in January.

    TfN has identified seven "corridors of opportunity" where the movement of people and goods across the region could be improved.

    This includes the route from the port of Liverpool to the Humber ports via Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Sheffield, and between non-carbon energy and research centres in Cumbria, north Lancashire, North Yorkshire and the North East.

    The strategy also outlines more detail on the vision for Northern Powerhouse Rail.

    It features a new line between Liverpool and the HS2 Manchester spur via Warrington, increased capacity at Manchester Piccadilly and a new link connecting Manchester and Leeds via Bradford.

    Humberside Police has been slow to improve child protection according to a report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.

    The watchdog says Humberside Police has made some improvements in how it safeguards vulnerable children, but has been slow to implement recommendations in other areas.

    They found only a quarter of the cases involving children were carried out to a good standard.

    The force says it acknowledges the issues raised and they're working to improve.

    Oxford and Cambridge are being outperformed by less prestigious universities at providing equal access to poorer students.

    Calculations for the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) put Hull University top for admitting a balanced intake of rich and poor students.

    A spokesperson for Cambridge said widening participation in higher education was "a complex issue" and the analysis relied on a single measure.

    Three new urgent treatment centres in East Yorkshire will lead to a better range of services for patients and be open for longer periods, health bosses say.

    The sites, at Beverley, Bridlington and Goole, opened today, replacing six minor injuries units which have now closed.

    There's been strong opposition to the closure of the minor injuries units and complaints that Hornsea has been left out.

    But NHS managers say they believe the new urgent care centres will improve health services.

    Hull-based communications company KCOM says it's doing more to reduce the gender pay gap between its male and female workers.

    The company has revealed that it has a gender pay gap of 38%.

    In a statement, the communications company says people who do the same job are paid the same salary, but they have a disproportionate amount of male workers in jobs like engineering.

    KCOM says it's doing more to encourage women into those jobs and in turn reduce the gender pay gap.

    The plans include an entrance on Mount Pleasant to avoid a nearby travellers' site.

    Humberside Police says there's been evidence of friction between the two communities.

    Some companies across East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire have revealed their gender pay gap between men and women.

    The gender pay gap is the difference between average hourly earnings for men and women.

    Unlike pay inequality, which compares the wages of men and women doing the same job, a gender pay gap is not illegal, but could possibly reflect discrimination.

    The average gap in the UK is about 10%.

    Locally, the Northern Lincolnshire Catholic Academy Trust, which run seven academies, says nearly 40% of women are paid less than men.

    At KCOM in Hull the gap is 38% and at Smith and Nephew it's 33%.

    Grimsby Institute has been named one of the UK's top colleges in the most recent government statistics.

    According to national achievement rates tables for 2016-17, the Institute is in the top 10% for the number of learners who gain a qualification.

    It also ranks 17th highest overall for student achievement.

    Ricky Coxon, executive director for information services and planning at Grimsby Institute, says the figures show how well the college is doing:

    Patients coming into Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital this month will be encouraged not to wear their pyjamas during the daytime as part of a national campaign.

    Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust is launching a 70-day initiative running in hospitals from 17 April to 26 June to get patients wearing everyday clothes instead of nightwear.

    Hospital bosses say studies show keeping hospital patients in their pyjamas can result in reduced mobility, greater risk of falls, loss of independence and longer stays.
