  1. Sussex Police officer sacked over New Zealand jobpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 16 August 2018

A Sussex Police officer has been sacked after taking a job in New Zealand while on a career break.

In October 2016 Temporary Det Con Aydin Misiri, 29, who was based at Hastings, applied for a job with the New Zealand Department Of Corrections.

He later resigned from the job and returned early to Sussex.

    Local Democracy Reporter

Plans for an extension to Hove Rugby Club's building have been approved by Brighton and Hove City Council's planning committee.

Neighbours had sent 14 letters opposing the plans to build more changing rooms and a meeting room at the back and side of the rugby club building - and a roof terrace.

More toilets will be included in the scheme as well as storerooms.

Councillors raised concerns about the roof terrace, particularly regarding access to prevent anti-social behaviour and drug use overnight.

Labour councillor Jackie O'Quinn said: "I remember when this was built and the kind of objections from residents at how big that was."

Nine committee members voted for the application, with Ms Jackie O'Quinn abstaining.

They said that the terrace could be used only between 09:00 and 22:00.

  11. Town plans twinning with Versaillespublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 16 August 2018

    Rebecca Curley
    Local Democracy Reporter

The Mayor of Versailles will visit Guildford next month as negotiations to twin the two towns continue.

It is understood the visit will take place over the weekend of 18-20 September.

Guildford Borough Council started considering the relationship with the French city in September 2017 when it formally ended its twinning association with Bar-le-Duc and decided to pursue links with Versailles.

The British Embassy has recommended Guildford as a "possible suitable UK twin" and in January Theresa May appeared to pre-empt the twinning by praising the scheme.

A spokesman for Guildford Borough Council said no exact plans had been put in place for the visit and could not confirm the dates.

Versailles is famous for its palace - the Chateau de Versailles.

It has a population of 88,641. Guildford's population is estimated to be around 80,000.

  17. Vacant shop closer to becoming micropubpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 16 August 2018

    Huw Oxburgh
    Local Democracy Reporter

A long-vacant shop in Hastings is one step closer to reopening as a micropub after proposals won support from planners this week.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Hastings Borough Council's planning committee approved an application to change the use of an empty unit at 80 Queens Road from retail to a drinking establishment.

Before making a decision, the committee heard from ward councillor Judy Rogers, who spoke in favour of the scheme.

Councillor Rogers said: "I've lived in Hastings for 20 years and Queens Road has - and I apologise because there are some residents sitting behind me - been rather depressed over the last few years.

"It is actually a very beautiful road, when you walk along it there are some lovely Victorian properties. It is really sad there have been so many businesses that have shut. Not just this shop but quite a number of shops.

"Recently there has been a breeze of change along Queens Road, which is being reflected in the number of new independent businesses opening."

Councillor Rogers added that the road was being considered as an "opportunity area" under the proposed area action plan and she felt the micropub would benefit this plan.

The committee also heard that the shop had remained empty for more than seven years.

Councillors have deferred plans to build 140 homes in Hastings due to concerns about traffic problems.

At a meeting on 15 August, Hastings Borough Council's planning committee considered an application seeking outline planning permission for the former Harrow Lane playing field site.

The proposals had been recommended for approval but councillors expressed concerns over the impact of more traffic on The Ridge, a road councillors said was already "badly congested".

While the committee heard East Sussex Highways considered the potential impact of new housing to be "acceptable", councillors asked for further information on how this opinion had been reached.

The committee agreed to defer the application to seek "clarification" from East Sussex Highways about what options were available for access.

The committee heard that the site had been allocated for housing under the Hastings local plan.
