    Toilets

For travellers on their summer holidays, where to stop for a toilet break can be a source of worry.

Public toilet provision has been declining for a number of years and the BBC has learnt that some UK high streets and tourist hotspots now no longer have any council-run public toilets.

At least 673 public toilets across the UK have stopped being maintained by major councils (unitary, borough, district and city) since 2010, according to figures obtained under the Freedom of Information law.

And even this masks big regional variations - although UK councils have stopped maintaining around 13% of public toilets between 2010 and 2018, Cornwall Council has stopped maintaining 94% of its toilets, for instance.

In that time, the UK's population has been increasing. Has the number of public toilets maintained by your council gone up or down?

  8. RMT angry at Chris Grayling's rail fare index suggestionpublished at 08:28 British Summer Time 15 August 2018

    Station

A suggestion that rail fare and wage increases should be linked to a lower inflation measure has sparked an angry response from unions.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling wants future increases to be based on the Consumer Price Index, rather than the current, higher Retail Price Index.

The RMT union accused him of trying to impose a "pay cap" on its members.

It comes on the day that the government publishes the latest RPI figure, which will decide rail fares from January.

Rail passengers will find out later today how much their ticket prices will go up by in January.

However, many people want to change the way fares in the industry are calculated.

Regulated rail fare increases are pegged to a measure of inflation known as Retail Price Index, which is typically higher than the Consumer Price Index figure.

Liz Martin, senior economist at HSBC, tells Radio Four's Today programme that using the RPI measure "is quite controversial".

She says that with RPI roughly one percentage point higher than both the CPI measure and average wage inflation, using such a measure to calculate rail fare increases is "outdated".
