    Ambulance

People dialling 999 are waiting longer for an ambulance than five years ago, a BBC investigation has found.

Secamb, the trust that serves the South East, received more than 800,000 emergency calls last year.

    That's 200,000 more than in 2013.

A Freedom of Information request found the average response times are around one minute 15 seconds longer for the most critical cases, and just under four minutes longer for less serious calls.

Secamb admits there is room for improvement.

  5. Workers and wheelie bins - how might Brexit affect local councils?published at 18:08 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    Ben Weisz
    Political reporter, BBC Sussex

Deal or no deal - how could Brexit affect our local councils?

Some have had a stab at answering that question.

Fewer migrants might lead to a shortage of care workers in East Sussex – the county council says 11% of its carers come from the EU.

Meanwhile, West Sussex's officers worry what might happen to the local economy, particularly around Gatwick Airport.

In Kent, the county council says new border controls could lead to a trebling in referrals to Trading Standards, while disrupted supply chains could cause a shortage of wheelie bins in Maidstone – whose council buys its bins from Europe.

It’s not all doom and gloom - some authorities hope that leaving the EU might unlock extra money, or cut red tape to make it easier for them to sign contracts and pay for services.

But the truth is, most of our councils have very little idea how Brexit might affect them.

The vast majority have barely begun to tackle the issue - in large part because they don’t feel Government has given them enough information about what scenarios they might be facing.

Tomorrow, they’ll get a bit more detail.

The Government will publish its backup plans in case the UK leaves the EU suddenly, without a deal.

It’s this prospect that scares people the most.

Already, some fear that sudden extra customs checks for lorries at the port of Newhaven would cause tailbacks and bring the town to a standstill. Others call that scaremongering.

But with just 219 sleeps til Brexit Day - councils will be fastening their seatbelts.

They know there could be major change to prepare for - and an ever smaller amount of time in which to prepare for it.

A heavily pregnant woman who has been missing from the Guildford area since Tuesday may have given birth, police say.

They are appealing for help to track down Sharna Carter, amid concerns for the welfare of her and her baby.

Surrey Police say Ms Carter, 28, who is blonde, thin and 6ft 2in (1.88m) tall, has links to the Woking, Guildford and Godalming areas.

Sgt Matt Tate said: "We believe she is heavily pregnant, but there is a chance she may have given birth, which naturally heightens our concerns regarding her welfare.

"At this stage it appears she has not approached local hospitals for medical help. Any information about her whereabouts or pregnancy could be vital for not just her health but that of her baby, too."

  9. More than 40 cases of measles in Kentpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    Caitlin Webb
    Local Democracy Reporter

Public Health England has confirmed there have been 42 cases of measles in Kent since the beginning of this year.

The head of public health at Kent County Council claims the outbreak is due to the amount of children having measles, mumps and rubella vaccines, being below the national target.

He says this could be a result of misinformation and worries about the links between the injections and autism.

To ensure the entire population is protected against these preventative infections, there is a target of 95% of children to receive both the initial jab following their first birthday and the booster when they start school.

At the beginning of the summer, Andrew Scott-Clarke addressed parents' fears and advised teenagers to double-check they have had their full treatment before heading abroad for festivals.

The latest data published by Public Health England, shows only 86% of five-year-olds in Kent and Medway received their second MMR dose from January to March this year.

  15. Anger at plans to close two GP surgeriespublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

    Dean Kilpatrick
    Local Democracy Reporter

Councillors have demanded health bosses carry out a full public consultation on proposals to close two GP surgeries in Medway.

Patients made their feelings clear from the sidelines as Medway Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) was questioned last night about its plans to shut the Sunlight GP Surgery in Gillingham and DMC Branch Surgery in Twydall.

The changes would see the two surgeries merged with the Balmoral Healthy Living Centre in Gillingham, St Mary's Island Surgery and the Pentagon Centre in Chatham.

Concerns include a lack of detail provided to both the authority's select committee and patients, the impact it could have on the future of the Sunlight Centre community facility, and how the consultation process has been carried out.

Councillors on both sides expressed their disappointment at the CCG's approach, and formally called for the decision - which is due to be made behind closed doors on 29 August - to be delayed.

Asked what impact it would have on the decision-making process, chief operating officer Stuart Jeffrey responded: "The only thing that I can say will happen is we will take the views and comments of this committee back to the meeting on 29 August."
