A historic and much-loved Victorian house will be demolished to make way for a housing development in Chilworth.
Residents said 74 New Road was the most "characterful" house in the village as part of their objections to a proposal for nine houses to be built in land behind other homes in the road.
The development by Ascot Designs and Bellfields Homes will be accessed by demolishing the house and creating a road for cars to come off New Road.
A total of 76 letters of objection were lodged against the application, a decision on which had been deferred twice.
But councillors at Guildford Borough Council's planning committee on 15 August said, with "heavy hearts", there were no formal reasons to reject the application in a bid to save the house.

The death has been announced of John Simmonds, the former deputy leader of Kent County Council.
Councillor Simmonds served on the authority for 17 years, during which he held two cabinet posts, first for education and then for finance.
He was brought up in Broadstairs and went to Chatham House School in Ramsgate, and before moving into politics he worked in banking.
He lived in Whitstable, and was married with three children.
He had held the Canterbury North seat on Kent County Council since 2001.
Quote MessageJohn has steered Kent County Council in recent years through the most austere financial times the authority has ever experienced. John was a wise, intelligent, determined and gentle man much loved by all who worked with him, and he will be greatly missed.”
Councillor Paul Carter, Leader, Kent County Council
