A day before, Andrew Burke, 31, of St Helens, had been convicted of harassing his ex-partner Laura Williams, who was in a relationship with Ms Hayes.

Prosecutor Gordon Cole QC told Liverpool Crown Court that following his attack on Ms Hayes, Burke remained in the shop, waiting for police to arrive.

He said the 31-year-old told a firearms officer: "I'm no threat to you, officer. I've got nothing else on me. The knife's on the table."

He said Burke offered an apology to the family that had been in the travel agents at the time and continued: "I was in court yesterday and I lost. It was either kill me or kill her, so I killed her.

He added that Burke said the "only reason" he had stopped the attack before police arrived was because "you'd shoot me and I didn't want to put you through that".
