    Members of Unite at the firm's Crewe headquarters have voted to support industrial action in a dispute over pensions.

    The luxury car maker says a growth in the deficit over the last two years has led to it consulting on changes to its pension scheme.

    An archive of letters, diaries and photos belonging to film star George Formby and his spouses has been found in a disused office in Preston.

    Formby, from Wigan, was one of the biggest stars of the 1930s and '40s, and the collection was found in a battered suitcase in a cabinet by an office clearance firm.

    It includes diaries and passports belonging to his wife Beryl Ingham and fiancee Pat Howson.

    Scott Felton, who found it, said he was "amazed" when he came across the items.

    Scrambler bike riders who cause problems in Huyton could soon face fines of up to £1,000.

    A protection order is being introduced in the Hillside and Page Moss areas next week, making it a criminal offence to use scramblers or quad bikes.

    The regulations will be in force for two years.

    Police say they are being put in place because of a small minority of people who have been involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.

    An 87-year-old woman was saved by her dog when it bit a man who attacked her in an attempted robbery, said police.

    Police said the dog bit the offender's arm when he hit the victim over the head with a large wooden stick, knocking her to the ground in her garden in Spa Lane, Salford on 13 March.

    Police said the attacker, thought to be about 25 years old, then fled the scene.

    Det Con Steven Hughes of Greater Manchester Police said: “She managed to escape without serious injury, but this incident could have been much worse if her dog hadn’t stepped in and scared the offender away.

    He said the force was hunting the offender who was white, 5ft 5in tall (1.7m), with dark stubble and a dragon’s tail tattoo on his forearm, stretching down to his finger.

    A teenager told police he first had sex with his teacher when he was 15 before continuing a secret affair with her.

    He had sex with Deborah Lowe at her Stockport flat and in her caravan and car, Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard.

    He told police that while sex with a teacher is "every lad's fantasy", he later felt "creeped out" and felt "awkward" at school.

    Ms Lowe, 53, of Elmsbed Caravan Park, Poynton, denies sexual activity with a child and five other offences.

    Blackpool players saw the funny side as Kevin Stuart, 34, towered over them and other younger mascots at Saturday's home game with Bradford City.

    Stitched up by his friends, he accompanied midfielder Jay Spearing while wearing a smart pair of shoes.

    Bradford City photographer Thomas Gadd said Mr Stuart looked "proper nervous" before acknowledging the crowd.

    However, he seemed to be something of a good omen for the home side, who went on to record a 5-0 victory.

    A drug addict who broke into his 80-year-old neighbour's home before raping and murdering her has been jailed for life.

    Charles Stapleton, 51, of Watts Close, Kirkby, admitted murdering Teresa Wishart who was was found dead on 19 October.

    Stapleton, who stole jewellery including Ms Wishart's wedding ring, was ordered to serve a minimum of 31 years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court.

    An exhibition of artist Annie Swynnerton's work has gone on display at Manchester Art Gallery.

    Born in Hulme, she campaigned for better opportunities for women and became the first elected female member at the Royal Academy of Arts.

    Nearly 800 reports of domestic violence within Greater Manchester's LGBT community were recorded by police during the last 12 months.

    In April 2017, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) became the first force in the UK to specifically record such abuse, and have logged 775 cases.

    Baroness Beverley Hughes, deputy mayor for policing, said GMP now has a "clearer picture" of the abuse.

    GMP said officers have also received extra training on dealing with victims.

    Ex-football coach Barry Bennell is to appeal against his 31-year sentence for child sexual abuse.

    The former youth coach, who worked at Manchester City and Crewe Alexandra, was convicted in February of 50 counts of indecent assault against 12 boys between 1979 and 1991.

    He was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court but has now applied to the Court of Appeal to have the term reduced.

    The 64-year-old is due to serve 15 years of his sentence in custody, with the rest on licence.

    A man who murdered an 80-year-old woman at her Merseyside home has admitted raping her.

    Charles Stapleton, 51, previously admitted murdering his neighbour Teresa Wishart, who was was found dead at her home in Kirkby on 19 October.

    Stapleton, of Watts Close, Kirkby, also admitted stealing Mrs Wishart's jewellery but denied rape.

    However, he changed his plea to guilty ahead of his scheduled trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

    Stapleton is expected to be sentenced later.

  18. Metrolink Eccles line to close for two weekspublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 10 April 2018

    A stretch of Greater Manchester's Metrolink spanning 11 stations is to close for two weeks while the network is extended.

    The service between Eccles and Cornbrook will close for 13 days from the end of July to mid-August.

    It will allow work on the new £350m line between Pomona and Trafford Park.

    Alex Cropper, Transport for Greater Manchester's head of projects, said no precise dates had been set but passengers would be kept informed.
