    A 27ft (8m) tall sculpture made out of thousands of surrendered knives has gone on display in Liverpool.

    The Knife Angel was created by artist Alfie Bradley using 100,000 blades as a memorial to people affected by knife crime.

    The knifes he used were surrendered during nationwide amnesties between 2015 and 2016.

    The Angel will be on display outside Liverpool Cathedral until the end of January.

    A multi-million pound project to build new college buildings and a council headquarters in the heart of Ashton, Tameside is set to go £120,000 over budget.

    Building work stalled in January after the collapse of the project’s lead contractor Carillion.

    To get contractors back on site, the town hall agreed to bring a new company in to save the project - with costs now rising to £14.3m.

    A report presented at a meeting of the strategic planning and capital monitoring panel this week revealed the overall Vision Tameside budget has now increased by £120,000 since June to £62.9m.

    The next phase of the development includes a new "advanced skills" centre for Tameside College, a public service and council base, and retail space for Wilko’s.

    Building work is due to be completed by 11 January.

    A man has been taken to hospital after being hit by the wing mirror of a HGV in Bootle.

    Police were called to the junction of Balliol Road and University Road just after 10:20 to reports a male pedestrian had been hit by a lorry.

    The man was taken to hospital and his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

    Road closures are in place and people are asked to avoid the area.

    The owner of shopping centres including the Trafford Centre and Manchester Arndale has seen its shares plunge after a takeover bid was abandoned.

    Shares in Intu, which owns 18 centres, including Gateshead's Metrocentre and Lakeside in Essex, sank 38% after a consortium led by Peel Group dropped its £2.8bn bid.

    The consortium blamed economic uncertainty and market volatility.

    It is the second time this year Intu has been jilted. In April, Hammerson abandoned a bid of £3.4bn.

    The consortium is made up of three companies - the Peel Group, Saudi Arabian firm Olayan and Canada's Brookfield Property.

    A man who attacked firefighters with a hammer as they responded to concerns about his safety has been jailed.

    Haman Rihan launched the attack in Salford on 1 October as the crew responded to concerns about an unresponsive man in a car.

    The 24-year-old abused the firefighters before smashing equipment with a hammer, Manchester Crown Court heard.

    Rihan, of City Road, Old Trafford, was jailed for three years after admitting the attack.

    Rail passengers face long delays on routes between Manchester and Liverpool after a points failure.

    The problem, between Patricroft in Greater Manchester and Newton-le-Willows on Merseyside, was expected to cause delays on lines around the North West until 09:00 GMT.

    Northern, TransPennine and Transport for Wales said passengers could use other services including Metrolink.

    Engineers were at the scene of the failure, Network Rail said.
