    The NHS trust which runs Dewsbury Hospital has taken the unusual step of asking two West Yorkshire MPs to clear up confusion about the future of its A&E department.

    The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust has written an open letter to Tracey Brabin and Paula Sherriff, external raising concerns local residents are getting the wrong information about changes at the hospital. 

    The letter says Dewsbury's A&E department is not closing and that it will continue to run 24 hours a day seven days a week. 

    It adds that most people who visit the A&E don't need a hospital bed overnight, but those who are "very ill" would be taken direct to Pinderfields when they call 999.

    This morning the Supreme Court ruled the UK Parliament must have a say on whether the government can start the Brexit process.

    The judgement means Theresa May can't begin talks with the EU until MPs and peers give their backing - although this is expected to happen in time for the government's 31 March deadline.    

    Gina Miller, one of the campaigners who brought the case against the government, says Brexit is "the most divisive issue of a generation", but adds her victory was "not about politics, but process".

    More officers will be on patrol in the area around Weston Park in Sheffield in the next few days in the wake of a serious sexual assault on a woman there last night, police say.

    The 21-year-old was attacked last night sometime between 22:35 and 23:00. 

    A large area of Weston Park currently remains cordoned off while officers conduct initial enquiries.

    A 21-year-old woman was seriously sexually assaulted, external in Weston Park in Sheffield last night.

    She was attacked sometime between 22:35 and 23:00 as she was walking through the park.

    The woman is receiving support from specially-trained officers and an investigation is under way, police say.

    A South Yorkshire mother whose children were killed by her former partner is due at Downing Street later to deliver a petition calling for improvements to the family court system. 

    Claire Throssell's sons, Jack, 12, and Paul, 9, died after their father Darren set fire to their home in Penistone in 2014. 

    More than 40,000 people have signed the petition, external, which follows a report by charity Women's Aid into cases of child death involving domestic abuse.

    • There's slow traffic in the roadworks area on the A59 eastbound in Blubberhouses between the Kex Gill Road junction and the Hall Lane junction
    • Heavy traffic's reported on the A638 Doncaster Road westbound in Wakefield between the B6378 Lodge Lane junction and the A655 Black Road junction in the roadworks area

    One of the country's burglary hotspots is in Leeds - that's according to an insurance comparison website which has looked at the postcodes with the highest number of claims.

    The LS5 postcode, which is the Hawksworth area, is number four in the list.

    An angry public meeting took place in Dinnington, Rotherham, last night, to discuss crime and anti-social behaviour in the wake of the death of 16-year old Leonne Weeks.

    It's a week since Leonne's body was found on a pathway off Lordens Hill in the town. An 18-year-old man has since been charged with her murder.  

    Ch Supt Rob Odell, District Police Commander for Rotherham, was at the meeting and says the depth of public feeling was clear. 

    He recently dedicated two extra officers to supporting the PCSO team in the area covering both Eastwood and Dinnington, but says they will need to get results:

    An independent inquiry into flooding in York in December 2015 says the city needs a better public warning system.

    The York Independent Flood Inquiry, external looked at why more than 600 homes and businesses flooded across the city. There are over 80 recommendations.

    South Yorkshire Police have blocked all entrances to Weston Park in Sheffield this morning.

    Officers and cars are on-site at Western Bank close to the Children's Hospital and the University of Sheffield. 

    The site is taped off and officers are officers are guarding the entrances.

  13. Thousands in Leeds set for lung cancer screeningpublished at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January 2017

    A £5.2m project claimed to be the UK's largest lung cancer screening trial is set to test 7,000 people in Leeds for the disease.

    Yorkshire Cancer Research is behind the investment which will visit communities in Leeds using mobile screening vans.

    The charity said it hoped the programme would identify almost 300 cases over two years.

    Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer in Yorkshire, with about 4,500 people diagnosed each year.

    Two police officers braved icy water this morning to rescue a three-year-old child and a woman after the vehicle they were in came off the road.

    It ended up on its side in a ditch on a country road in South Milford, on the North Yorkshire-West Yorkshire border.

    Both occupants of the car are reported to be scared after their ordeal, but OK.

  20. Man arrested in Halifax on suspicion of murderpublished at 07:36

    A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a body was found in Halifax.

    West Yorkshire Police said they were called to an address at Holly View, Triangle, at about 23:00 on Sunday "following a concern for safety".

    Officers discovered the body of a man in his 60s inside the property.

    The force said a post-mortem examination had been carried out and "the death is being treated as suspicious at this time".
