    A West Yorkshire man has been jailed for six years for killing a policeman on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali .

    David Taylor, originally from Halifax, has been jailed for six years. The 34-year-old was found guilty of hitting Wayan Sudarsa with a bottle on the popular Kuta beach last August.

    His Australian partner Sara Connor, 46, was jailed for four years for her part in the assault. The pair have always insisted they were acting in self defence.

  2. Fracking firm could drill in Rotherhampublished at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    The energy firm Ineos says it has identified a potential new site to drill for shale gas near Harthill in Rotherham.

    The company has submitted an environmental screening report to the council and hope to submit a full planning application soon.

    Ineos says it will set up a community liaison group with local councillors and residents to hear their views.

  4. New hydro-electric station to open today near Wakefieldpublished at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    A new development which uses the River Calder to provide power to 800 homes will be opened today.

    It's thought to be the largest of its kind to be built in the region, and is in Kirkthorpe, which is around four miles from Wakefield. 

    This is the biggest plant commissioned in England since the start of the century, costing just over £5m, and it was built in less than a year and a half.

    The company behind the scheme, Barn energy, says that it should provide energy for the area for more than a hundred years.

  5. Rustlings Road trees to be replanted todaypublished at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    Sheffield Council are replacing the trees they took down on Rustlings Road.

    Three people were arrested in November after protesting against the tree felling programme.

    Now 16 trees being planted this week, replacing eight that were felled in 2008, and seven that were brought down in November.

    They are described as heavy standard trees and are two to three metres tall.

  6. Family appeal after Doncaster hit and runpublished at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    The family of a woman who was killed by a driver in a stolen car in Doncaster on Saturday have made an appeal for information about the hit and run.

    Susan Gravel, 62, died when a grey or silver BMW 5 series hit her on Station Road at Stainforth, near to the junction with King George’s Court, at 12:55 on Saturday 11 March.

    The BMW, thought to have been displaying a registration plate with the prefix HV07, hit a parked vehicle on Station Road, before hitting Susan.

    Before the crash, the BMW was seen leaving the Asda car park on Station Road, close to where police officers in an unmarked police car were patrolling.

    Campaigners who want an independent public inquiry into events at Orgreave during the miners strike are heading to London today.

    Organisers of a protest in London say they are planning their biggest and noisiest demonstration outside the Home Office this afternoon urging the Home Secretary Amber Rudd to change her mind.

    In June 1984 thousands of police and striking miners clashed violently at the Orgreave coking plant in South Yorkshire.

  9. Fundraising page set up for 83-year-old farmer cleared of GBH published at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    An online fundraising page has been set up to pay the £30,000 court costs of an 83-year-old farmer from near York.

    The pensioner shot Richard Stables in the foot in November 2015, believing he was planning to take diesel. 

    Now celebrity lawyer, Nick Freeman, who's known as Mr Loophole, has stepped in and set up a crowd funding page to help.

    Despite the not guilty verdict, Mr Hugill will still have to pay the £30,000 he incurred for his defence.

    The lawyer says the current system where those found not guilty are not entitled to recoup their legal fees is an "absolute disgrace, particularly in circumstances such as these."

    West Yorkshire Police says thousands of people have been caught not wearing their seatbelts over the last three years. 

    The force is starting a new campaign today - it's reminding both drivers and passengers of the dangers of not belting up.

  11. Listen: Doncaster market 'on its knees'published at 09:20 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    Traders at Doncaster market say it's "on its knees" and say they won't be consulted on any changes when a private firm comes in to help redevelop it.

    Some traders say the only thing that will revive the market is by reducing the rents.

    The development could cost as much as £5.1m, with Mayor Ros Jones saying the developers will be working closely with traders.

    Industrial action by workers from the rail company Northern , means only 40% of their trains are running today. 

    There are reduced services running from Selby to Leeds, York via Harrogate to Leeds, Scarborough to Hull, among many routes affected.

    The RMT union's Micky Thompson says there are a number of reasons behind the strike:

    I've been down at Sheffield railway station this morning to see the result of the rail strike in South Yorkshire.

    It seems to be slightly quieter than normal, but with the majority of trains leaving Sheffield being operated by East Midlands Trains, who aren't striking, it doesn't seem to be having a massive impact on passengers.

    Thirteen trains were scheduled to leave on time in the next hour, with two of those trains being operated by Northern.

    There are no reports of significant congestion or disruption on the region's roads.
