    The mother of a wheelchair user forced off a bus has urged drivers to do more to help disabled passengers.

    Caroline Hazelgrave said her son Luke, 26, who has cerebral palsy, was asked to get off a Leeds bus when a passenger would not stand to allow his wheelchair on.

    The incident followed a  Supreme Court ruling  in January that bus drivers must do more for wheelchair users.

  2. Teen kickboxer was 'one of the finest champions'published at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    The teenager who died after a kickboxing title bout in Leeds has been described as 'one of our finest champions in every sense', by the World Kickboxing Association (WKA).

    Scott Marsden, 14, was taken to hospital after the incident on Saturday, but police confirmed earlier today that he has died.

    Jon Green, from the WKA, said on Facebook that Scott, from Sheffield, was a true ambassador of the values out of the ring.

    "Not just WKA but the world of kickboxing is mourning such a well loved and respected fighter and sportsman," he says.

    "In every sense it does not seem real or even possible."

    It's one of the country's last remaining police boxes and it's in Almondbury near Huddersfield.

    The box has fallen into disrepair, but local councillor Bernard McGuin is leading a campaign to rebuild it.

    The blue boxes - now perhaps better known as Dr Who's time machines - were a way of contacting police by phone across the country from early 1900 to the 1960s.

    I'm at the scene of a lorry crash on Penistone Road in Sheffield this afternoon.

    The lorry you can see here has crashed into an electricity substation.

    Police say the crash happened around midday today and the HGV is carrying rubble.

    There are no reported serious injuries, but the driver has been taken to hospital.

    Northern Powergrid say businesses around the crash site have lost power. They're trying to reconnect the supply as soon as they can.

  5. Inquest finds Ripon teenager died 'by accident'published at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    A teenager from Ripon  who fell into a river on a night out died accidentally, a coroner has concluded.

    Henry Burke, 19, was a student at Bath Spa University. He drowned on a night out in the city centre last November. 

    Now, an inquest has found he may have "entered the water by accident due to intoxication by alcohol".

    His death is the latest of several in the River Avon in recent years, and sparked a petition to improve safety.

    A primary school is set to represent the UK and Rotherham at the worldwide finals of a robot design competition.

    Children from Brampton Ellis Primary will travel to Kentucky and show off their winning designs for a robot.

  7. Family of murdered Leeds teacher Ann Maguire seek answers ahead of inquest published at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    The family of Leeds teacher Ann Maguire say they have serious concerns regarding the scope of an inquest into her death.

    Mrs Maguire, 61, was stabbed to death by student Will Cornick at Corpus Christi Catholic College in east Leeds in 2014.  

    The Maguire family want a Judicial Review of the coroner's decision to exclude certain evidence and witnesses.

    Following a recent pre-inquest review the family have concerns over how thorough the process was.  

    Lawyer Yogi Amin, who is representing the family, said the Maguire family are seeking permission for a Judicial Review to challenge the coroner’s decision to exclude evidence and witnesses that they feel are vital to finding out the true chain of events leading to her death.

  8. Major plans for three key buildings in centre of Leedspublished at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    Leeds City Council says three Grade II listed buildings in the city are set to be transformed.

    Two of the three buildings will be refurbished while the third will be transformed into a "distinguished hotel".

    The Leonardo and Thoresby buildings, a former printing works and teachers’ college, both constructed around 1900 will be refurbished and modernised as office space.

    A building on Great George Street, formerly a school built around 1890, will become a hotel with 340 rooms.

    An electrical substation has been damaged after a "heavy truck" crashed into a building on Penistone Road.

    Sheffield's Streets Ahead team say the traffic signals are out and they are asking drivers to avoid this hazard.

  10. School pay tribute to 'bright and popular' student after kickboxing death published at 12:51 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    Forge Valley School has paid tribute to one of their students who died in a kickboxing match at the weekend.

    Scott Marsden, 14, (pictured below, centre) was taken to hospital during the bout in Leeds, but police today confirmed he had died.

    Traffic is building on Penistone Road this afternoon after a lorry has crashed into a building.

    It's only just happened, so we'll try and bring you more information when we can, but traffic is already busy in the area.

  13. 'River Avon is Bath's serial killer', says father of drowned man published at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    The father of a 19-year-old man man found dead in the Avon says the river is Bath's own serial killer.

    Henry Burke, 19, from Ripon in North Yorkshire, was last seen leaving Zero Zero nightclub in Bath in November.

    His father, Paul, is calling for better safety measures after a series of people drowned there over the last eight years.

  15. Fundraising campaign for teenage kickboxerpublished at 11:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    Friends of teenage kickboxer Scott Marsden have started a fundraising page in his memory.

    The 14-year-old from Sheffield collapsed during a bout in Leeds on Saturday.

    He was taken to hospital but police today confirmed he had died.

    The page, external  has so far had more than £1,000 pledged.

    Charlotte Rowett, who is the organiser of the campaign, wrote: Everything Scotty did he did with passion and a confidence that was a pleasure to behold. He was the most wonderful, talented boy and the loss of him will leave a hole in so many people's lives.

    "Scott was not only a kickboxer though, he is a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin and a friend. 

    "No amount of money can take away the pain his family are feeling today and always, but no family should ever have to cater for coping with the loss of a 14-year-old boy, with his whole life ahead of him."

    Police have confirmed they are not treating the death of a teenage kickboxer Scott Marsden as suspicious.

    The 14-year-old from Sheffield collapsed during a bout taking place in Morley near Leeds on Saturday.

    His death was confirmed by police earlier this morning.

    Det Insp Phil Jackson, of Leeds District CID, said: "The incident is not being treated a suspicious and enquiries are being carried out into the circumstances for a report to the Coroner.

    "We are in contact with the family and are offering them every support at what is understandably a very difficult time for them.

    "They have asked that the media respect their privacy at this time. "

    A 14-year-old boy has died after collapsing during a national kickboxing competition. 

    Scott Marsden from Sheffield needed urgent medical attention during an English title fight in Morley near Leeds on Saturday. 

    The teenager was taken to Leeds General Infirmary in a "critical condition" but later died. 

  18. Tree protesters will 'not be arrested' under trade union legislation published at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    People protesting against the controversial felling of trees in Sheffield will not be arrested using trade union legislation, according to Dr Alan Billings.

    The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner (SYPCC) says they won't arrest anyone in future using trade union legislation, or any other law, because convicting the protesters isn't in the public interest.

    In an email seen by the BBC, the SYPCC says there are civil remedies open to the council to pursue which do not involve criminal law.

    Nine protesters were charged under a trade union law on Chippinghouse Road, but the charges were later dropped.

    Bottom right, Sheffield's The Wild garden provided us with a pic clearly showing the moon's many dead volcanoes and impact craters and, bottom left, Carol's Countryside gave us the torch-like glow above Hemingborough.  

    March's full moon is commonly known as the worm moon, because it's the time of year when warmer temperatures thaw the ground and earthworms emerge.  

  20. Listen: Family of farmer cleared of GBH say legal system 'not working' published at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    The family of an East Yorkshire farmer left in debt after being cleared of grievous bodily harm  has been critical of the legal system. 

    An online appeal's now been launched to help pay 83-year-old Kenneth Hugill's £30,000 legal defence fees. 

    Last week, he was found not guilty  after shooting a man on his land at Wilberfoss, near York, who he believed was about to run him over.
