    An historic police box, thought to be one of the last of its kind in the country is about to be restored in a West Yorkshire village. 

    The box, at Almondbury near Huddersfield (pictured), has fallen into disrepair, but local councillor Bernard McGuin's leading a campaign to rebuild it and as you can hear, the villagers think it's a great idea:

    The blue boxes - now perhaps better known as Dr Who's time machines - were a way of contacting police by phone across the country from early 1900 to the 1960s.

    A Sheffield pub has been designated an "asset of community value" by the council, helping to prevent it from being closed down, sold off or redeveloped.

    The University Arms, on Brook Hill, is owned and run by the University of Sheffield and was given the status during Sheffield Beer Week.

    It means that should the owner want to sell off the pub, it gives the community six months to try and raise funds to buy it back.

  3. York Normandy Veterans: End of an era in York Minsterpublished at 10:13 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    A group of World War Two veterans who fought on the beaches of Normandy say today will be the end of an era as they lay-up their ceremonial standard in York Minster.

    The Normandy landings in 1944 were the largest-ever seaborne invasion.

    The remaining four members of the York Normandy Veterans' Association, who are in their 90s, will lay the group's standard in a final resting place in a short service at the Minster.  

  4. Squash champion donates winnings to ill boypublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    Squash world champion Nick Matthew  from Sheffield has donated his Canary Wharf Classic winnings to an 11-year old boy to help with his brain tumour treatment.

    Sumner Malik, who also plays squash, has been diagnosed with a rare type of brain tumour.

    A horse owner has warned of the dangers of releasing large party balloons and lanterns after her young mare choked and died on a balloon on her land. 

    Jennifer Birtwhistle who runs Harrogate Riding Centre said her three-year-old horse, Feisty, broke her neck and legs when she bolted after the balloon got stuck down her throat.

  6. Police catch 52 drivers in purge on mobile phone offenderspublished at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    South Yorkshire Police say they caught 52 drivers committing a mobile phone-related offence such as texting and driving, in a week-long crack down this month.

    They stopped almost 300 vehicles and issued 88 penalty points between 1 March and 7 March.

    From 1 March, the penalty for using a mobile phone while driving doubled to six points on your licence and a £200 fine.

  7. Police appeal after Doncaster fatal hit-and-runpublished at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    Police are calling on the public's help after a 62-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Doncaster at the weekend. 

    Susan Gravel was hit while walking along Station Road, in Stainforth, Doncaster at about 12:55 GMT on Saturday.

    She was struck by a grey or silver BMW 5 Series that failed to stop and was later found abandoned in Goole.  

    South Yorkshire Police have been trying to track down the driver since then. 

    Initially police thought the grey  BMW involved was stolen  but now say that's not the case.

    An application to create what would be Leeds' biggest lap-dancing club goes before the city council today.

    If it's approved it'll be the fourth establishment of its kind in the city centre - the maximum amount the council can approve licences for.

    Some people say they're concerned the proposed venue is too near to the historic Corn Exchange (pictured) and creates the wrong impression of the city:

  9. Listen: Female Muslim prisoners in Yorkshire - death threats on release published at 07:50 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    A new report has found that female Muslim prisoners are being shunned by their families and sometimes threatened with death after being released from prison.

    The research was carried out at two women's prisons in Yorkshire, New Hall jail at Wakefield and Askham Grange near York.

    The initiative has just received royal recognition, after Princess Anne handed the team an award for it's work in the criminal justice system.

  10. Man arrested after armed police called to Doncaster housepublished at 07:27 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    A man has been arrested after armed police were called to a house in Doncaster on Monday.

    Officers were called to a house on Wensleydale Road, in Scawsby, at about 15:30 GMT, after neighbours raised concerns for the safety of a resident. 

    South Yorkshire Police tell us this morning that one person has been arrested and the incident ended just before midnight.

  13. Inquest into death of Saddleworth Moor 'mystery' manpublished at 06:55 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2017

    The death of a man whose body was found in mysterious circumstances on Saddleworth Moor will be considered at an inquest later.

    It took police more than a year to establish David Lytton's identity and a provisional cause of death was given as " strychinine poisoning ".

    David Lytton, 67, was found fully clothed and lying on the ground by a cyclist near Dove Stone Reservoir in December 2015.

    The Londoner, who had been living in Pakistan for 10 years, had no obvious connection to the area and had no form of identification on him. 

    A full inquest is scheduled to begin at Heywood Coroner's Court at 14:00 GMT.
