    A 19-year-old Harrogate powerlifter has returned home to North Yorkshire as a European Champion.

    Luke Richardson competed in the junior section of the powerlifting competition in Denmark. 

    A deadlift of almost three times his body weight secured him first place in the over-120kg category.

    Number plates have been stolen from a vehicle parked in a North Yorkshire hospital car park.

    The theft took place on Friday at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton some time between 08:00 and 18:15.

    Suman Kaur, a Leeds College of Art Access to HE Diploma student, was revealed as the winner on the show's finale last night.

    Polish-speaking teaching assistant Tomasz Turowski is doubling up as a radio newsreader at Bradford's Miriam Lord Primary in a bid to keep Eastern European parents up-to-date with school news.

    Mr Turowski, who speaks a number of Eastern European languages, started in the new role this week.

    His announcements will be a mix of news, information and music broadcast three times a day on the school's radio station.

  12. 'Bullied' soldier jailed for Catterick Garrison attackpublished at 17:01 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2017

    A trainee soldier who tried to stab a fellow serviceman in the head amid claims he was bullying him  has been jailed for six years .

    Pte James Farrell, 18, said he was only trying to warn Rifleman Curtis Horbury during the incident at Catterick Garrison, in North Yorkshire.

    But a court martial last month in Colchester heard the blow was aimed at his colleague's head.

    Farrell, from Halifax was convicted of attempted murder.

  13. Cleckheaton burglars steal 'distinctive' jewellery worth £25k published at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2017

    Jewellery worth about £25,000 has been stolen from a house in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire.

    The burglary took place on Nibshaw Road between 11:00 and 12:30 last Friday.

    Watches, bracelets and gold sovereigns were among the items stolen.

    PC Sally Baines says the stolen items were "distinctive and unusual" and would "stand out" if offered for sale.

    "They represent a lifetime of collecting antique watches and this incident has caused the victim considerable amount of distress and heartache," she adds.

    Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact police.

    The South Yorkshire Police force has tested whether staff at the county's hotels have enough awareness of child sexual exploitation.

    As an exercise, an adult male police officer tried to check into various hotels with a teenage girl police cadet.

    South Yorkshire Police then provided training to those hotels which allowed the pair access to a room.

    • In Sheffield, all five hotels tested rejected admission
    • In Barnsley, six out of seven hotels tested rejected admission
    • In Doncaster, seven out of 13 hotels tested rejected admission
    • In Rotherham, two hotels failed to reject admission

    Today may be the first official day of Spring, but that doesn't mean that York's panto fans are already getting in the mood for Christmas.

    Hard as it might be to believe, tickets have gone on sale for the Barbican Theatre's festive production of Robin Hood and Babes in the Wood.

    Eastenders actor Ricky Norwood, who'll play comic character Silly Billy in the panto, says:  "It's going to be really exciting. Something I really love about it is talking and interacting with the audience, getting the kids dancing and 'It's behind you'. It's going to be a lot of fun."

    A missing Doncaster teenager has been found safe and well, police say.

    Sixteen-year-old Leo Watson was found in Doncaster town centre this afternoon.

    Police have thanked the public for their help in the search.
