    A 19-year-old powerlifter has returned home to Harrogate a European Champion - Luke Richardson, competed in the junior section of the competition in Denmark. 

    A deadlift of almost three times his body weight secured him 1st place in the over 120 kilogram category.

    He says seven meals a day and a pizza the night before got him the win:

    Yesterday's rain provided a selection of colour across the county and our BBC Weather Watchers were quick to capture it.

    Yorkie sent in the collection of coloured water droplets, with the Emley Moor mast in the background, at Denby Dale.

    Bottom left is reflected light above Worrall, on the outskirts of Sheffield, thanks to David for that one.

    And David's Data provided the multi-coloured arc above Harrogate.

    There are plans for a new playground on the site of an old Sheffield school.

    Wisewood School closed in 2012.

    Now a land swap agreement with developers means that part of the former site will be turned into a playground.

    A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving as investigations continue into a collision on Doncaster Road in the Dalton area of Rotherham.

    At 20:20 on Saturday night a 64-year-old man died after a collision outside the Silverwood Miners Welfare Club.  

    Anyone with information is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police on 101.

    Sir Patrick Stewart has said seeing Huddersfield Town reach the Premier League is "all he needs" to make his year perfect, but he needs help learning the club's chants.

    Speaking after receiving the Empire legend award, the Star Trek and X-Men star said he aimed to see every one of the club's matches this season.  

    He told the audience: "Huddersfield Town Football Club have to get into the Premiership this season, but I'm not a chanter, and I have to confess I don't understand a lot of the chants.

    "I will be in Huddersfield in two days' time and one of my plans is to have them print out for me what those chants are so I can join in."

    Elsecar is to become one of the first 10 Heritage Action Zones in the UK.

    The zones have been launched by Historic England and will see neglected buildings restored and existing conservation areas improved.

    It's hoped the Heritage Action Zone designation could provide an economic boost by encouraging regeneration and enabling access to more funding.

    A Sheffield care home is to close.

    Four Seasons Health Care has announced the Hartwell Care Home will close after a consultation with staff and residents.

    The firm says Hartwell has been operating at a "substantial loss".

    It is in talks with Sheffield City Council to rehouse the 26 residents currently living there.

    Last week, Four Seasons announced the closure of the Amethyst House care home at Rossington in Doncaster.

  10. Vulcan fundraisers hit £200k target for Cold War giantpublished at 08:49 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2017

    Campaigners who want to restore the last airworthy Vulcan bomber have hit their fundraising target.

    A total of 2,500 supporters have donated £100,000, which has been match-funded by philanthropists.

    It means the much loved Cold War giant can be maintained until the end of 2017.

    The Vulcan To The Sky Trust says the plane could be back to what's known as a "ground-running" service by the Summer.

    The trust is currently looking for a permanent home to display the Vulcan, which is currently in a hangar at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

    The legendary plane stopped flying in October 2015 due to difficulty in finding experts in 1950s engineering and the necessary parts.

    After a rollercoaster season, York City are through to the final of the FA Trophy - they'll play Macclesfield town at Wembley on May the 21st. 

    York beat Lincoln City 3-2 on aggregate, with Saturday's second leg of their semi-final finishing 1-1 after extra time.

    Two women have been arrested in connection with an alleged attack on a former X Factor contestant from Sheffield. 

    Singer Lucy Spraggan appeared on the show in 2012.

    The singer took to social media saying she was attacked after a gig in Brighton last week. 

    Sussex Police say a 26-year-old woman and a 27-year-old woman, who were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and have been released on bail.

  14. Funding hope for Yorkshire landslip roadpublished at 08:12 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2017

    North Yorkshire County Council is hoping for a share of £100m of funding to help reroute the A59 between Skipton and Harrogate. 

    The road at Kex Gill, which regularly requires maintenance, "suffers a significant chance of a landslip", according to the council.

    The road forms part of a major regional cross-Pennine route carrying almost 9,000 vehicles per day.  

    It was closed early last year after significant movement and cracks were detected on the hillside .

    The Department for Transport has indicated funding for a realignment programme is a possibility - the scheme is estimated to cost around £33m.

    South Yorkshire Police say an anti-terrorism exercise at Meadowhall was "extremely positive".

    A total of 856 volunteers took part in the drill in the early hours of this morning, together with police and other emergency services.  

    Deputy Ch Con Mark Roberts said "brave acts" were carried out during the drill to protect others.

    He added that the environment was as real as possible and the exercise will be used to improve future anti-terrorism procedures.

    The UK terror threat has been at "severe" since August 2014.

  19. Sheffield anti-terror attack preparationspublished at 07:11 Greenwich Mean Time 20 March 2017

    South Yorkshire Police have carried out an anti-terror attack operation overnight. 

    It took place at Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, to test the response and preparedness of the emergency services to a possible attack, with over 850 volunteers taking part in the exercise.

    The threat level to the UK remains at "severe", as it has been since August 2014, and the operation formed part of a national programme of exercises required under the Civil Contingencies Act. 

    Deputy Ch Con Mark Roberts says it was a positive and useful exercise which "tests the collective ability to respond to an emergency on a large scale".

    Almost half of people in our area admit to texting while driving according to new research. 

    This is despite tough new penalties for using mobile phones while at the wheel.

    In Yorkshire and the Humber 44% of people admitted to dealing with texts while in control of a vehicle, putting our region at the top of the UK list. 

    At the beginning of March,  sanctions for such usage were doubled  to six penalty points on your licence, and a £200 fine.
