    Something pretty special is happening at Beningbrough Hall, external at Newton on Ouse just outside York over the next few days.

    Today sees the start of something there that you really don't get the chance to see every day - portrait restoration.

    A team from the National Portrait Gallery in London has descended on the Hall’s collection of famous "Kit Kat" portraits to give them and their frames some TLC.

    We all have the rare chance to see them in action from now until Thursday.

    One in six roads in Yorkshire will need to be repaired or even closed within the next five years because of potholes.

    That's according to a major road survey out today, which also claims that each local authority has on average £5M of backlogs of road repairs to try to clear.

    The study also found the number of potholes filled by councils fell by 19% in England last year, with local authorities needing £12bn to bring the roads up to scratch.

    Rotherham Council say the number of childminders in the area is going down, as people leave or retire, coupled with interest waning in childminding as a career.

    The council wants to recruit more childminders and is offering free information sessions for prospective childminders, along with a package of free support and low cost training.

    The former head of music at an independent school in North Yorkshire has been sentenced to 28 months in prison after pleading guilty to having sex with a pupil.

    Dara De Cogan, 58, appeared before York Crown Court today charged with 10 counts of sexual activity with the girl who was a pupil at Ampleforth College.

    Sentencing him this afternoon, judge Andrew Stubbs QC said he'd taken advantage of her insecurity and innocence.

    He said it was an abject failure of the trust parents had placed in him and the college.

  12. Yorkshire soldiers to be celebrated during Tour de Yorkshirepublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

    Soldiers who helped Tadcaster after the Christmas 2015 floods will return to the town as part of this year's Tour de Yorkshire.

    The Yorkshire Regiment Drums Platoon will march out ahead of both the men's and women's races when stage two starts in the town on 29 April.

    Organisers have also revealed details of a fan zone on the Stray in Harrogate, which will include live music, as well as a mini food festival on Crescent Gardens.

    Sheffield Steelers defenceman Mike Ratchuk is out for the rest of the season after having surgery on his hand last week.

    The American, who joined the Steelers last year, was injured in training last week.

  14. Yorkshire school to close this yearpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

    A small North Yorkshire school is to close.

    Drax Community Primary, near Selby, which has only 10 pupils, will shut at the end of the current school year.

    North Yorkshire County Council says numbers are expected to fall further there.

    Last month it was announced that Horton in Ribblesdale Primary, which has a similar number of children, will close in the summer.

    Police are still trying to establish the identity of a woman found dead in a lake in Leeds.

    The woman was discovered this morning in Roundhay Park and the area was cordoned off, but people are now being allowed to walk there again.

    Detectives think she went into the water sometime between last night and this morning.

    They think she was around 50-years-old, she was wearing a black and green dress and a dark blue coat. She had dark greying hair and was wearing glasses. 

    It's not yet known who she was or how she died.

  17. Police launch investigation after human bone discovered in Leeds published at 15:39 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

    An Investigation's underway after the discovery of what's thought to be a human bone beside the M1 south of Leeds. 

    An area of land around Junction 45 has been taped-off since yesterday lunchtime with detectives saying they're in the early stages of enquiries.

    West Yorkshire Police said: “Initial indications are that it is a human bone and a scene remains in place whilst early stage enquiries are ongoing."

  20. What does the Barnsley council tax blunder mean for you?published at 15:19 British Summer Time 28 March 2017

    If you live in Barnsley, you might have had a council tax letter land on your doormat.

    But after a problem with a computer software, around 10% of council tax bills sent out had the wrong address on them, an error that could affect 10,000 households.

    What does it mean for you?

    • In practice, you probably won't be affected. Just 10% of people in the area will have their addresses incorrectly put on the letters. 
    • Barnsley Council say for a minority of households the address is so wrong the letter wouldn't have been delivered.
    • If you've not already received your letter, you should get one in the next few days.
    • If in a few days you still haven't had your letter, you'll need to contact the council online , external or by calling them on 01226 787787.
