Hesley Group, which runs both homes, said it was working with authorities over the "extremely serious concerns".

An Ofsted inspection into one of the homes last month found children were "at serious risk of harm".

A spokesperson for Hesley Group said: "These allegations are extremely serious and concerning and we are working closely with authorities to investigate all the allegations raised.

South Yorkshire Police said: "Work is currently ongoing by officers to review the information available and identify any criminal offences which may have occurred".

Ofsted confirmed the registration of Fullerton House School and Wilsic Hall children's homes had been suspended due to safeguarding concerns.

A man entered the Spar store on Bad Bargain Lane and demanded cash from a staff member and threatened her with a knife at about 21:40 on Wednesday, according to North Yorkshire Police.

The man, thought to be in his mid 20s, of medium build and about 6ft tall, left the store empty handed, but as he left he knocked over a wine rack, potentially leaving him with stained clothes, police said.

He then ran off in the direction of Rydal Avenue.

The man was wearing a black jacket with the hood up, black trousers and shoes, with a green woolly scarf over his face. He was also carrying a black drawstring bag, officers said.

Det Sgt James Pearson said: "“Fortunately the staff member involved in this incident was unharmed, but it’s understandably left them very shaken and upset.

"I'm appealing to anyone who has any information, or saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident to contact us.”

The Army veteran, who was originally from Keighley, West Yorkshire, raised almost £33m for NHS charities by walking 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden before he turned 100.

His family have asked people to create their own "100 challenge" for charity.

David Beckham has pledged to do 100 keepy-uppies and Dame Mary Berry will be baking 100 cakes.

The event, which begins today on what would have been Capt Sir Tom's 101st birthday, runs until Monday.

Capt Sir Tom, whose fundraising walk in his garden in Marston Moretaine captured the hearts of the nation last year, and generated nearly £39m after Gift Aid, died with coronavirus at Bedford Hospital on 2 February.

His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore urged people to create their own challenge to raise money for the Captain Tom Foundation or a charity of their choice.

"The whole Captain Tom 100 challenge was something that my father was firmly round the table talking with us about," she said. "It has his imprint in it.

"There was only one thing we could do and that was carry on what my father started by walking 100 laps of the runway, the driveway that became so famous."

  13. Starting HS2 in north 'would have been sensible' - Shappspublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 29 April 2021

Starting construction of the entire HS2 rail project from north to south would "probably have been sensible", according to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.

Work is already underway on the first phase of the high-speed rail project between London and Birmingham.

Phase 2a is planned to run from Birmingham to Crewe, and Phase 2b from Crewe to Manchester, and from Birmingham to Leeds.

The Government-commissioned Oakervee Review warned last year that the final bill for HS2 could reach £106 billion at 2019 prices.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Hilary Benn, Labour MP for Leeds Central, said: "Given that the National Infrastructure Bank is going to be based in Leeds, wouldn't it be highly symbolic to start building phase 2b of the eastern leg of HS2 from Leeds southwards?"

Mr Shapps replied: "It probably would have been sensible to start the entire project from the north-south in the first place.

"However, having looked at this in great detail - not least with the Oakervee Review - I also know chopping and changing those plans partway through is the most expensive possible outcome and doesn't work out."
