The Army veteran, originally from Keighley, won the nation's hearts by walking 100 laps of his garden during the first lockdown, raising almost £33m for NHS charities. He died on 2 February after contracting coronavirus.
North Yorkshire artist Andrian Melka began work on the 2m (6ft 6in) clay statue following the news of his death, and it is now almost ready to be cast in bronze and donated to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
"I was really inspired by Captain Tom, not only for raising so much money for the NHS but also in encouraging others to put one foot in front of the other and remain optimistic during challenging times," Mr Melka said.
Mr Melka has been working with Leeds Hospitals Charity to identify a suitable home for the finished statue.
If the crowdfunding target is reached, it has been agreed it will be installed in a newly refurbished courtyard garden at Leeds Chapel Allerton Hospital.
A billion-year-old fossil found in the Scottish Highlands could be the earliest multicellular animal recorded by science so far.
The microscopic fossil was discovered at Loch Torridon in Wester Ross by researchers led by the University of Sheffield and the US's Boston College.
Scientists said it could prove a new link in the evolution of animals.
Researchers could identify it contained two distinct cell types thanks to the fossil's "exceptional preservation".
The fossil gives a new insight into the transition of single-celled organisms to complex multicellular animals.

People in Scarborough are being warned to stick to coronavirus rules following an increase in the number of fines being issued by police for illegal indoor gatherings in the district in the last week.
Ch Insp Charlotte Bloxham, from North Yorkshire Police, said 34 fixed penalty notices were issued in the last seven days, more than four times the week previous. Of these 27 were issued in the Scarborough borough.
Insp Bloxham told a meeting of the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum: “This is disappointing considering last week we had cause to issue just seven notices.
“The majority of these latest fines were issued for indoor gatherings in the Scarborough area with three issued in York and four issued in Harrogate."
She added: "We ask that just like the vast majority of the people across North Yorkshire you adhere to the regulations which prevent indoor gatherings until the roadmap out of lockdown has succeeded."
A Harrogate man who used a fake online profile to dupe children into sending him graphic images of themselves may have targeted "many more," police have said.
Dale Tyson, 30, tricked 10 victims in the UK and US by pretending to be a young North American man.
Detectives, however, believe there may be more victims and have urged anyone who thinks they may have been targeted by him to come forward.
During a hearing at York Crown Court on Friday, he pleaded guilty to charges including causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and making indecent photographs of a child.
Tyson was jailed for 10 years after he admitted 17 offences.
North Yorkshire Police, who have only just released details of the sentencing, said: "His offences relate to 10 different victims from across the UK and US but we believe there are many more."
Det Sgt Steven Alderson said: "The young victims who came forward showed incredible bravery in speaking to the police about what happened to them and, in speaking out, they have helped protect many more young people from Tyson's deplorable behaviour."
Tyson was also made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order and told his name would be placed on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period.
The force said anyone who thinks they or a child may have been a victim of online abuse should call the police immediately or make contact confidentially online through CEOP, external.

A Harrogate brewery is looking for volunteers to label cans of beer by hand after new equipment got stuck on the Ever Given cargo ship in the Suez Canal.
A new labelling machine was due to arrive at the Rooster's Brewing Company earlier this month but remains on board the ill-fated vessel.
