    Congratulations to Rotherham-born artist Jason Davies, who's work won first prize in the painting category at the London Biennale in Chelsea.

    Mr Davies, who started painting in 2002, said that painting "saved his life".

    A lorry driver who was jailed in his absence for trying to smuggle nearly six million cigarettes through Dover is behind bars.

    Richard Curtis, who's 57 and from Bawtry in South Yorkshire, was sentenced to three years and nine months at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday, but failed to appear.

    He was found in a pub in Jacksdale near Nottingham, when a member of the public spotted him following a media appeal.

    The illicit cigarettes, which were found hidden in a load of frozen food, would have cost the exchequer £1.3m in lost duty.

  4. Northern rail strike - what you need to knowpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    It's worth remembering that there will be another strike tomorrow on Northern rail services.

    The RMT union is disputing plans to bring in more driver-only-operated (DOO) trains, but the management say they want a negotiated solution and deny jobs will be lost. 

    Northern say that they expect to run 822 trains, about 32% of their normal services. They also say that train tickets will be accepted on Arriva buses.

    The M62 eastbound is closed after J25. 

    Police have confirmed that it's shut after a woman fell from a bridge. Officers say she has serious injuries.

    Motorists are facing more than five miles of queues and at least an hour-and-a-half's worth of delays as traffic backs up to around J23.

    Back to the incident on the M62 which has closed the motorway eastbound after J25.

    Traffic is now backed up to J23 with one-and-a-half-hour delays.

    It's not clear what has caused the road closure, Highways England say that it's down to a "police incident".

    More on that accident on the M62 eastbound which has closed the motorway after J25, external .

    Currently there are queues back to J24, with Highways England saying that there are delays of 40mins, but you can expect that to increase.

    The latest information we have is that the road should be reopening soon.

    Sheffield City Council has announced it's extended a deadline for bids to regenerate Sheffield Ski Village by a further two weeks until Friday 21 April,.

    The council says it's because it has received a "strong demand" from investors expressing interest in developing the site at Parkwood Springs.

    Once the deadline passes the council will then carry out more in-depth work with shortlisted parties, before announcing what will be on the new site.

  9. Are you feline furr-sty for the purr-fect cuppa? - Cat cafe to open in Leeds published at 13:47 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Standby cat-lovers of Leeds, it's been confirmed that a cat cafe is coming to the city this summer!

    The exact location is a closely guarded secret, but the people behind it say the cafe will become a purr-minent fixture around August this year in the city centre.

    Kitty Cafe already have a successful site in Nottingham where, they say, they are booked up months in advance. 

    The idea is that you order some food and then get to play with the cats as you eat.

    The cats themselves are all rescued and if you really fall in love with them there's also the possibility of adopting them

    Earlier we enjoyed the cute antics of Fidget the weasel , frolicking in his new home in Thixendale.

    The wildlife artist, Robert E Fuller, gave Fidget a home, after he was abandoned in York last year at just four-weeks-old.

  11. Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust babies in test errorpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Hundreds of babies have had hearing tests that "may not have been carried out correctly", according to an NHS trust .

    Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust said 680 babies born between February 2016 and 17 January this year in West Yorkshire would be invited to repeat the test.

    The error was discovered "during a routine audit", said the trust.

    Anne-Marie Henshaw, head of midwifery, said: "There is a low risk that any hearing loss may have gone undetected."

    A lorry driver who was missing from court when jailed in January has been found in a Nottinghamshire pub.

    Richard David Curtis from Bawtry in South Yorkshire was given a three-year and nine-month sentence for his involvement in a £1.3m illicit tobacco plot.

    The 57-year-old smuggled 5.7 million cigarettes into the Port of Dover. They had been hidden under boxes of frozen chips inside his HGV.

    Curtis had said he was unaware of the illicit cigarettes but was found guilty by a jury. He is now behind bars. 

  13. York racecourse £4m makeoverpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    York Racecourse has unveiled plans for a £4m revamp of the area opposite the main grandstands. 

    The large open space attracts 60,000 racegoers each year.

    The area the racecourse wants to develop is popular with families. 

    Plans include improving access for pushchairs and wheelchairs, increasing the number of toilets and doing more to make the Listed Clock tower a centrepiece.

    It's hoped the improvements will help to protect some of the buildings against flood damage.

    If the plans are approved the new facilities will be ready for the 2018 racing season.  

  14. Crowd-funding bid to buy Tramlines is launchedpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    A £1.2 million crowd-funding bid to buy Sheffield's annual Tramlines festival has been launched today.

    Music City Foundation is behind the proposed buy-out, saying they want to "buy back the festival for the people".

    The group has until mid-June to raise the money and submit a proposal to the Tramlines board.

    Festival director Sarah Nulty says the board has "agreed in principle to the offer" subject to shareholder approval.

  15. Leeds nursing homes branded 'inadequate'published at 12:18 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    Health officials in Leeds have been told half of the city's nursing homes require improvement or are inadequate.

    The comes from the head of a council committee that oversees adult social care in the city. 

    A meeting is taking place today aimed at trying to work-out how best to care for older people in the future.

    An art gallery has launched a campaign to raise more than £3m to buy a picture by a Victorian artist .

    York Art Gallery is currently showing more than 30 works by Albert Moore, who was born in York, in the first solo exhibition of his work since his death in 1893.

    It includes A Revery, which the gallery wants to purchase for £3.6m.

    The gallery said it was a "rare opportunity" for a public collection to acquire such a significant painting.

    A 22-year-old woman has been charged with attempted robbery after a teenage girl was targeted in Barnsley.

    Joanne Lofts, also known as Joanne Hansbury, of Gerald Road in Kendray has been charged after an incident on Tuesday 28 March where where a 15-year-old girl was targeted on West Road, Pogmoor. 

    Joanne Lofts (Hansbury) will appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court later.

    A family is appealing for help in finding a missing woman who has not been seen since leaving her home in Micklefield on Monday.

    Svitlana Krasnoselska was last seen at her home at about 05:00 on Monday. 

    She is known to her friends as "Lana" and her family are becoming increasingly concerned.

    A woman has died at a level crossing at Thorne Moorends.

    North Common Road remains closed in both directions but the rail line between Thorne and Doncaster is not reporting delays.
