    A big fire at an industrial estate in Kilnhurst is causing problems for people living nearby.

    One lady told me she can't return home because of the blaze, which broke out at Universal Recycling on Wharf Road this morning.

  2. UKIP MEP could face bankruptcypublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 8 May 2017

    UKIP Yorkshire and Humber MEP Jane Collins could face bankruptcy after she failed to pay damages to Rotherham's three Labour MPs.

    It's over remarks she made about the town's child abuse scandal.

    Ms Collins was ordered to pay a total of £358,000 in damages and costs after a long-running legal battle ended at London's High Court in February. 

    But she appeared in court in Hull for a further hearing today after she did not meet a 21-day deadline to pay the damages.

    Earlier, we showed you this fantastic picture from BBC Weather Watcher Thomas Beresford who described this cloud formation over Ribblehead Viaduct as "a phantom Concorde":

    We wanted to know more about what this actually was, so we asked BBC Look North weather expert Paul Hudson for a bit of an explanation.

    He tells us it's what's technically known as a roll cloud and is "quite rare".

    "In this instance, it’s caused by air flowing over the top of Whernside from the east, creating effectively a stationary type of lenticular cloud," says Paul.

    "Its shape and size is dependent on the wavelength of the stationary wave," he adds.

    People in West Yorkshire are being urged to become foster parents, with the launch of a campaign to give those considering looking after a child the chance to meet experienced carers.

    Across Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside more than 11,500 children live in foster care.

    The people behind the campaign say carers are particularly needed for certain groups of children such as brothers and sisters, older children and those from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.

    A recent poll by YouGov suggests one in eight adults in the UK has considered fostering a child.

    Planned strike action by workers at three DHL warehouses at Tickhill in South Yorkshire and Harworth in Nottinghamshire has been called off after a new pay deal was reached.

    Staff have "overwhelmingly" accepted an improved offer of 2.6% for the year starting June 2016, according to the union, external.

    About 120 members of Unite had planned to walk out later this month in the row over pay and the closure of the Harworth site.

    Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn are to face an audience in York as part of a BBC Question Time Leaders' Special next month ahead of the general election on 8 June.

    The TV special, on Friday 2 June, will be hosted by David Dimbleby, and will see the public questioning the party leaders on substantive issues of policy which matter to them.

    The York debate will be one of a series of programmes from several cities across the country including London, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Bristol, Swansea, Belfast and Manchester.

  14. Rotherham recycling blaze: Plastic, metal and machinery on firepublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 8 May 2017

    A fire at a Rotherham recycling plant, which is currently being tackled by about 30 firefighters, mostly involves plastic, but also metal and machinery, the fire service has confirmed.

    Incident Commander Andy Hayter, from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, says neither vehicles nor oil are on fire at Universal Recycling on Wharf Road in Kilnhurst.

    Mr Hayter has asked people to stay away from the area as firefighters continue to deal with the blaze which started at about 10:15 this morning.

    "My message is, don't come and spectate. It's not a spectator sport and it's not good for your health to be breathing in large quantities of this stuff," he says.

    Mr Hayters adds that firefighters have pumped large amounts of water from a nearby canal to help in tackling the blaze which he believes could continue for several hours.
