    Barnsley College Sports Academy recently beat Brighton, Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College 6-2 to lift the Association of Colleges National Cup Final trophy.

    The team's also won the Association of Colleges Yorkshire and Humber League and the Komm Mit International Copa Maresme Football Tournament, external.

    North Yorkshire Police have issued CCTV images of two men they would like to speak to in relation to the theft of a number of items from Superdrug and Boots in Ripon.

    The two men were seen entering Superdrug and then Boots in the Market Place at around 10:40 on Wednesday 3 May 2017. 

    A number of items totalling £400 in value were taken, including several packets of slimming tablets.

    Prison Officers have needed hospital treatment after breathing in smoke from drugs used by prisoners.

    One officer has told BBC Radio Sheffield that she's been off ill twice because of the problem.

    The Prison Officers Association, external says it has huge concern over the issue and is worried about the long-term effects on its members.

    Doncaster's jails aren't the only ones seeing the problem; this footage is by an undercover reporter for the BBC's Panorama programme who captured such an incident at HMP Northumberland.

    The POA wants prisons to become smoke-free zones as soon as possible.

  4. 'Brassed Off' band to play live at Royal Albert Hallpublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

    Grimethorpe Colliery Band, external is in London taking part in Brassed Off Live, external at the Royal Albert Hall.

    In an unusual twist, the band will provide live accompaniment to the South Yorkshire-based movie as it's shown on a big screen.

    The film, released in 1996, tells the tale of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band winning the National Brass Band Championships in the same week its members hear their mine is closing.  

    Cast members from the film will also be at the event for a live Q&A session.

  5. New appeal for foster parents in Yorkpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

    Only 1% of people who show an interest in fostering actually go on to do it, according to a survey commissioned by the You Can Foster, external campaign.

    So now, City of York Council is urging more people to consider helping children through fostering.

    It may sound like something from The Jetsons, but a new handbag which uses light-emitting thread and LEDs is set to take the fashion world by storm - and it's been designed in Leeds.

    It'll hopefully mean no more rustling around for your keys and phone with the handbag lighting up on the inside when it's opened.

  7. Major outdoors festival returns to Sheffield city centrepublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

    Lovers of the great outdoors will be celebrating with the news that the Cliffhanger Festival, external is coming back to Sheffield city centre this year.

    The festival includes the British Bouldering Championships, which involves the country's strongest climbers competing on a large wall in Devonshire Green.  

    It's not all about climbing, though: the festival, which is due to run between 7 and 9 June, will also include mountain biking, running, skateboarding and orienteering.

  8. CCTV appeal over Sheffield pub attackpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

    Police want to speak to the man in these photos following an alleged serious assault in Sheffield last month.

    A 24-year-old man was left needing an operation after the attack at Players Bar on West Street at about 21:55 on Sunday 16 April.

    The victim has since been released from hospital.

    Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police.

    The Prime Minister Theresa May is giving a speech in York just now.

    Labour hold a 6,000-plus majority in the city but it's being targeted by the Conservatives. 

    Mrs May arrived in the city earlier to address a specially invited audience.

    She's talking about the party's priorities for the election campaign and says they are the "team" of people she needs behind her to get her message out to voters.  

  10. Two-times Olympic champ Adams on home turf for Salazar boutpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

    Leeds' double olympic champion Nicola Adams is due to face Mexico's Maryan Salazar in the city on Saturday night.

    It will be 34-year-old Adams' second professional fight and the first in her home city in 20 years.

    Salazar, 18, has lost once in six professional contests.

    The fight will mark the first time Adams has fought over four three-minute rounds, rather than the conventional two-minute rounds in women's bouts.

    Now dismantled, the poster's special material, bearing a poem by West Yorkshire poet Simon Armitage, captured pollution in the city centre:

    A big fire in Kilnhurst which broke out yesterday is now under control, according to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    The number of fire engines at the scene has now been reduced to three and the fire service says that through the day, people may notice the smoke start to thicken again.

    This is because crews will be digging through the recycling to make sure the flames are fully extinguished. 

    The advice remains the same: please avoid the area if possible, and if you live nearby keep doors and windows closed. 

    There is still a large amount of smoke in the area and a number of residents close by are advised to find alternative accommodation, the fire service says.

    The Green Party in Leeds says it won't put up its own candidates in two marginal constituencies in the city in order to make way for Labour candidates.

    It says it's withdrawing from Morley and Outwood and Pudsey because Labour's promising to respect Green views and values there. 

    The party says "the broken first-past-the-post electoral system" is forcing their hand and they say they'll continue to campaign for "a fairer proportional voting system in order to remove the need for tactical voting from politics for future elections".

    People with cancer in Yorkshire are being given the chance to get together and swap experience while also being given what's described as a "toolkit" of information.

    Llife With Cancer 2017 is an event organised by Yorkshire Cancer Research and will take place at Harrogate's Convention Centre in November. 

    It will offer expert advice from researchers and health care professionals while also being a place for people with cancer and carers to talk to one another.

  16. Jobs to go as school bus company closes in South Yorkshirepublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 9 May 2017

    Thousands of school children will have to find a new way to get to school in South Yorkshire with the news that BrightBus is closing down. 

    The firm's boss says the closure is in order to allow staff to get a decent redundancy payment, adding that if he were to sell the company on, staff would be likely to get a raw deal in future.

    A total of 90 jobs are at risk and services are due to end this summer.

    A 76-year-old woman has been hit on the head with a hammer and  robbed in Cleckheaton.

    It happened yesterday afternoon on the Spen Valley Greenway when she was approached from behind and hit on back of the head with a hammer.

    A man, who is aged around 60, slim and wearing a bobble hat and glasses then stole her purse and ran off. 

    The woman was taken to hospital where she remained overnight. Police say her injuries are not life threatening.

    A sparrowhawk has been found shot dead at Feldom, near Richmond, in North Yorkshire.

    Police say it died during the last week of April 2017, in the area of High Waitgate, close to the Marske to Newsham road.

    As you can see above, an X-ray image shows that pellets from a shotgun killed the bird.
