    If you've ever wondered what it was like to live the life of a Viking, wonder no more.

    A virtual reality mask has been created by researchers at the University of York working with the Yorkshire Museum.

    It means visitors will be able to see what life was like in a Viking camp in Torksey, Lincolnshire, in AD872-873, as the Vikings waited out the winter months, preparing to conquer vast swathes of England.

    Academics have created views of life in the camp, aimed at engaging the senses as people watch Vikings repairing ships on the shore, melting down stolen loot and playing games.

    Yorkshire will play Surrey in the quarter finals of the One-Day cup following the final round of group matches last night.

    The fixture will take place at Headingley in June, with tickets going on sale soon.

    The winners of this tie will play the Worcestershire Royals in the semi final, who qualify for that stage of the competition automatically having topped the Northern Group.

    Theresa May has launched the Conservative manifesto in Halifax this lunchtime, it includes big changes to social care and aims to balance the budget by 2025.

    She listed "five great challenges" she said Britain faces as a country:

    1. The need for a strong economy

    2. Responding to Brexit and a changing world

    3. Tackling enduring social divisions

    4. Responding to an ageing society

    5. Facing up to fast-changing technology

  4. Bradford Council staff dress up for the weekendpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 18 May 2017

    Bradford Council staff are being encouraged to show their support for the town's football team, by wearing Bradford City football shirts and scarves and dressing in claret and amber.

    The council's dress-up Friday is also aimed at raising funds for the club’s official charity, the BCFC Burns Unit Appeal.

    The team are in a promotion bid to the Championship on Saturday against Millwall at Wembley.

    The clock tower on City Hall, the fountains in City Park and the archways at Forster Square Railway Station will be lit in the team colours from Friday evening.

    There will also be Bradford City flags flying in Centenary Square.

    The sights and sounds of a Viking army camp have been brought to life through virtual reality.

    Visitors to the Yorkshire Museum, external in York will be able to see what life was like in a camp in Torksey, Lincolnshire, through a special mask created by researchers at the University of York, working with the museum's digital team.

    The exact location and scale of the camp at Torksey has been the subject of academic debate, but researchers at the universities of York , externaland Sheffield , externalhave revealed it was probably at least 55 hectares, bigger than most towns and cities of the time.

    More than 1,000 archaeological finds have been made at Torksey, including more than 100 Arabic silver coins and more than 50 pieces of chopped-up silver, such as brooch fragments.

  10. Spate of car fires across South Yorkshirepublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 18 May 2017

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called to several car fires overnight.

    In Dunscroft near Doncaster, they found a car alight at around 19:40 BST, which they believe caught fire accidentally and later that night in Fishlake they found a burned out vehicle which they believe was arson.

    Then in the early hours of this morning three incidents were reported in Sheffield.

    The first on Vikinglead Road, when officers arrived they found a car burned out and again the fire service believe it was started on purpose.

    Two more incidents also occurred, one on Kingston Street in the city and the other on Mansfield Road.

    People in the small market town of Masham, in the Yorkshire Dales, are being encouraged to share cars in a bid to save money and meet other people.

    For the last few weeks BBC TV viewers have seen the advantages of travelling to work with a colleague in the comedy, Car share.

    North Yorkshire County Council is encouraging those who travel in the same direction to hook up with each other in a scheme called Liftshare, as a pilot for other parts of the county.

    Justine Brooksbank, from the County Council, came up with the idea:

    Ibolyi is originally from Hungary and was last seen wearing black jeans and a dark blue three-quarter length hooded jacket.

    Detectives investigating the murder of a woman whose body was found on Sunday have this morning arrested a 25-year-old woman on suspicion of assisting an offender.

    Two men, aged 26 and 20, and a 27-year-old woman remain in custody on suspicion of the murder of 26-year-old Sinead Wooding.

    Her body was found by joggers in woods near Alwoodley Crags car park in Stairfoot Lane, Alwoodley.

    Police say a number of scenes are being investigated and enquiries are ongoing.

    Plans to convert a disused railway viaduct in Leeds into an elevated park will be discussed later.

    The plans for the 300m long park on the edge of the city centre are partly based on the Highline in New York, a green space built on a former section of railway.

    As the part of the proposals, new homes would also be built at the site off Whitehall Road.
