  1. Election campaign stops to remember murdered MPpublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 22 May 2017

    The leaders of the main parties stopped campaigning for an hour yesterday to remember the late Labour MP for Batley and Spen, Jo Cox.

    The 41-year-old was shot and stabbed multiple times by right-wing extremist Thomas Mair in her constituency.

    Her widower Brendan Cox said it would "send a powerful message" ahead of the first anniversary of her death.

    Mr Cox said the co-ordinated suspension of campaigning would send a message that "whatever our political disagreements, we really do hold more in common and show a united front against hatred and extremism in all its forms".

    To mark the anniversary of her death, Mr Cox has organised the Great Get -Together, external from 16 to 18 June, where thousands of community gatherings such as street parties, picnics and coffee mornings will be held across the country.

    A minimum of six UK music festivals are expected to introduce an initiative allowing revellers to test their illegal drugs this summer.

    Reading and Leeds Festivals and a number of other live music events are aiming to introduce the scheme with the support of local police forces.

    The move follows a spate of drug-related deaths at festivals in recent years, including Olivia Christopher, from Buckinghamshire, who died last year at BoomTown Fair Festival in Winchester.

    She is the fourth person to have died during the seven-year history of BoomTown.

    A woman from North Yorkshire who claims her baby was taken at birth 25 years ago in Spain, is travelling to Madrid today.

    Ruth Appleby was told her daughter died after she gave birth to a child in Spain in 1992 but later learned thousands of Spanish babies were taken and given up for adoption.

    The organisers of Leeds Festival, external are looking at plans to allow people to test their drugs on site before taking them.

    They're hoping to get the backing of West Yorkshire Police, external for this pioneering scheme which would see festival-goers take their substances to a special tent to identify the ingredients contained in the drugs.

    West Yorkshire Police say they're looking at the proposals and add that approval would also be considered by the local authority and health services.

    Nearly half the population of South Yorkshire lacks confidence in their police force, according to a survey for the county's Police and Crime Commissioner.

    The report, obtained by the BBC, shows the force's reputation is tarred by historical issues such as the Miners' Strike, Hillsborough and the Rotherham CSE scandal and current issues like neighbourhood policing and the lack of bobbies on the beat.

    The survey also found the best way to restore confidence was to boost neighbourhood policing, with 75% of people questioned wanting more officers on the streets.

    In response, South Yorkshire Police says a review designed to improve things is under way and that a new leadership team under Chief Constable Stephen Watson has been working to improve matters since last year.
