    More than 100 children and their families attempted to climb Snowdon at the weekend, to raise money for a charity set up in memory of Oscar Hughes from York.

    Oscar died from a brain tumour in 2014, when he was nine-years-old.

    Oscar's mum, Marie and brothers Sebastian and Lucas took part in the a mass-fundraising event.

    Marie told me they were hampered by pouring rain and 70 mph winds, but so far the event's raise £16,000:

    Sheffield-born and former Blades youngster Dominic Calvert Lewin scored the only goal in the Under 20 World Cup final at the weekend.

    Their victory over Venezuela in South Korea is now raising hopes that the young star can become a leading figure in England's senior team.

    The player moved from Sheffield United to Northampton Town in 2015.

    Last summer saw Sheffield being taken over by brightly-painted elephants.

    They became known as the Herd of Sheffield, external and were created and placed around the city to raise money for a new scanner at the city's Children's Hospital.

    More than £400,000 was raised via an auction of the elephants for equipment which will help to save lives, external by detecting blood flow problems.

    The scanner will be unveiled at the hospital tonight.

    Thousands of visitors were in York to celebrate the LGBT community at the weekend.

    Events included an open top bus and a march from the Minster.

    Doncaster's Mr Fishfinger isn't letting defeat by Tim Farron in his Cumbria seat leave him floundering.

    It came after a poll on Twitter concluded that Mr Farron was less-trusted than a fishfinger.

    Now, the wanna-be MP reckons he can have much greater success elsewhere in politics.

    One of the main gateways into York will be closed to traffic for the next three weeks.

    It's because work's needed on Micklegate Bar.

    It's part of City of York Council's £1.5m restoration scheme to preserve and protect the city's medieval walls.

    The current walls were largely built in the 13th and 14th centuries but include remains from earlier periods.

    Stretching over 3.4 kilometres, they are also the longest historic walls in the country, with five main gateways, known as "bars", one Victorian gateway and 45 towers,

    The work is expected to be fully complete by late October.

  7. Recruitment drive at steel plants in Rotherham and Stocksbridgepublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    A recruitment drive begins this morning at the former Tata steel plants in Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

    Liberty House took over the factories just over a month ago.

    They're looking for 40 new specialist staff for the Rotherham site.

    Liberty says it plans to eventually take on 300 new staff.

  8. Sinead Wooding death: Woman accused over woodland bodypublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    A woman has been charged in connection with a body found in woodland near Leeds.

    The body of Sinead Wooding, 26, was found by joggers near Alwoodley Crags car park in Stairfoot Lane on 14 May.

    Vicky Briggs, 25, of Reginald Mount, Chapeltown, is accused of assisting an offender and is due at Leeds Magistrates Court on Monday.

    Two people have previously been charged with murder and a 20-year-old has been charged with assisting an offender.

  9. Doncaster Hedgehog 'blown up like beach ball'published at 07:37 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    A hedgehog "blown up like a beach ball" has been rescued and diagnosed with a severe case of balloon syndrome.

    The animal, which had inflated to twice its size, was spotted wandering around in circles by a member of the public in Toll Bar, Doncaster.

    RSPCA inspector Sandra Dransfield said it was clear the animal was suffering the rare condition, which is caused by gas collecting under the skin.

    The large 1kg (2.2lb) hedgehog has been transferred to the RSPCA's Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich, Cheshire, where he will be thoroughly examined under general anaesthetic and the air released.

    He will be cared for at the centre until he is ready to be returned to the wild.

    When I was young there was an animated public information film on the TV, external (1972) with a very strident, authoritative, voice telling a young man to "learn to swim."

    Well, if new research is to be believed, it might be time for a new set of films with a similar message.

    According to the Swimming Teachers' Association, one in five children in Yorkshire don't know how to swim.

    The statistics, which cover children aged up to 16, show over a quarter of parents say lessons cost too much and more than a third admit they don't like the water themselves, can't swim themselves, or they lack the confidence to teach their children.

    Despite this, nine out of 10 parents think swimming is a life skill and more than half are worried their children aren't confident swimmers.

    Alistair Brownlee beat brother Jonny as they repeated last year's achievement of a British one-two at the World Series Triathlon event in their home city of Leeds.

    The Brownlees dominated in their first race together since Alistair carried stricken Jonny over the line in last year's World Series finale in Cozumel in Mexico.

    The duo opened up a sizeable gap in the cycle before Olympic champion Alistair ran clear with 2.5km left to win in one hour, 46 minutes and 51 seconds. Jonny crossed the line 12secs later with Spain's Fernando Alarza third.

    They were among the first out of the water and were part of the lead group on the bike leg, before breaking away after the first 10km.

    Alistair said: "It was really special. You can never expect to win a race and know what is going to happen."
