    A grandmother from Rotherham is preparing to swim across the English Channel to raise money for charity.

    Janet Myers only started swimming outdoors because she was fed up of slow swimmers clogging up the lane at her local baths.

    Now, after lots of outdoor swimming sessions, she's readying herself for the challenge and raising money, external to help people who have spinal injuries.

    There's a very famous sporting face in North Yorkshire today.

    Sky Sports' Jeff Stelling has his boots on as he strides through the county as part of his attempt to walk 15 walking marathons in 15 days - today is day 13.

    Jeff's undertaken the trek to raise £500,000 for Prostate Cancer UK - a disease that kills one man every hour in the UK.

    He set off from Harrogate Town F.C this morning, heading for Bedale.

    A South Yorkshire Police officer has been charged with causing injury by dangerous driving.

    It follows an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

    The driver of a Vauxhall Astra suffered significant spinal injuries in a collision with a police vehicle last October.

    The accident happened at the junction of Bellhouse Road and Ecclesfield Road in Sheffield.

    A passenger in the car was also injured but not seriously.

    PC Gareth Lee, aged 26, will appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court on 20 June.

  5. Manchester attack: Wendy Fawell funeral to be heldpublished at 11:09 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

    The funeral of a former primary school worker who died in the Manchester terror attack is due to take place in West Yorkshire.

    Wendy Fawell, 50, from Otley, was killed when a bomb was detonated outside the Manchester Arena as an Ariana Grande concert was ending.

    Ms Fawell travelled to the event on 22 May with friend Caroline Davis Osborne and their children.

    The mother-of-two was last seen in the foyer area shortly before the blast.

    Huddersfield's Lois Toulson won European Championship gold in the 10m platform as she finalises her preparations for next month's World Championships.

    The 17-year-old scored 330.70 in Kiev to finish ahead of Russian duo Anna Chuinyshena (326.90) and Iuliia Timoshinina (313.30).

    "To be honest, I did not expect this victory," said Toulson. "I am not totally satisfied with my dives yet."

    The World Championships take place in Budapest, Hungary from 14 July.

    Figures show a decrease of 5,000 in our region between February and April - to 137,000.

    Nationally, unemployment has fallen by 50,000 - to 1.53 million - the lowest for more than a decade.

    A man who was caught on camera kicking, shouting and swearing at his young dog has been jailed for the attack.

    Thomas Miller's husky-type dog, Gizmo, was distressed throughout the assault.

    Miller, 25 of Schofield Street, Mexborough, was jailed for 18 weeks at Doncaster Magistrates' Court.

    He admitted causing unnecessary suffering by inflicting blunt force trauma, physical violence and intimidating behaviour.

    Miller was also ordered to pay £500 court costs, a £115 victim surcharge and given a lifetime ban from keeping animals.

  12. Six incidents every hour: Domestic abuse in West Yorkshirepublished at 09:57 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

    The latest statistics on domestic abuse show that West Yorkshire Police deal with, on average, six incidents every hour.

    Last year the number reported to the force jumped up by nearly 14%, to just over 26,000.

    There were also 146 forced marriage incidents reported in the year up to September 2016 and 89 "honour based" abuse cases.

    West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, has launched a plan to help victims, which he says he hopes will help to prevent more incidents of domestic abuse happening.

    A consultant in Sheffield has warned about the risks of routinely taking aspirin.

    A study in The Lancet, external says a daily low dose aspirin to prevent blood clots can be disabling or even lethal for people aged 75 and over with a history of heart attacks or strokes.

    Yet those who are told to take it by a doctor shouldn't be alarmed.

    Imogen Ellis is an extraordinary girl who is coping with a life-changing disease.

    At 16 she's living with cancer and had her leg amputated six weeks ago.

    Her family are trying to raise money, external to pay for a better type of prosthetic leg to allow her to be more active.

    Imogen, from Dronfield, has been speaking to me about her condition.

    A public vote has seen Grimethorpe Colliery Band being chosen to receive a blue plaque to mark their musical acheivements.

    The band, borne out of the colliery of the same area name in Barnsley, was formed in 1917.

    Like many of the 47 plaques nationally, Grimethorpe's will be unveiled tomorrow for BBC Music Day.

    Hundreds of people have signed a petition opposing the possible privatisation of North Yorkshire's Patient Transport Service.

    At the moment the service is run by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, but there are fears that could change.

    Crews take people to hospital appointments and clinics if they can't use public or other transport because of their medical conditional.

    A new petition, signed by 450 people, says the service is under imminent threat of privatisation.

    The contract for patient transport is up for tender, but BBC Radio York understands there is no immediate suggestion the Yorkshire Ambulance Service will lose it.

  20. Former West Yorkshire MP wants to record albumpublished at 08:06 British Summer Time 14 June 2017

    West Yorkshire's three new MPs will be sworn in at parliament later.

    Thelma Walker, Alex Sobel and John Grogan won seats at last week's general election.

    Meanwhile, the former MPs who lost their seats are planning their next moves.

    One of them, Greg Mulholland, represented Leeds North West as West Yorkshire's only Liberal Democrat MP.

    The former York student says one of the things he's looking forward to is recording an album with his acoustic folk band, Summercross:
