    The story of how human heavier-than-air flight was invented right here in Yorkshire will be told on TV tonight.

    Sir George Cayley, from Scarborough (pictured), successfully developed a glider which flew from Brompton Dale, near his home town, in 1853.

    When his glider took its first flight, Cayley was aged 79, so his coachman John Appleby is believed to have become the world's first pilot as the craft flew for 153m before crash landing.

    Cayley's story's being told in Invented in The North on BBC One at 19:00.

    The story is brought up to date with the Rotherham firm inventing unmanned aircraft to do everything from monitoring polluting ships to finding people lost at sea.

    Daniel Brown, 22, ran off from officers last Wednesday morning after being led out of St James's Hospital, where he was being treated.

    He had been arrested after being recalled to prison for an 18-month sentence for possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence in June last year.

    With the news that late Yorkshire poetry legend Ted Hughes is to be honoured with a sculpture in Mexborough, did you know?:

    • Edward James Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire, in 1930
    • He left Mytholmroyd for Mexborough in South Yorkshire and from there went on to Cambridge
    • His first book of poems, Hawk in the Rain, won critical acclaim upon its release in 1957
    • Hughes became Poet Laureate in 1984 and remained in the post until his death from cancer in 1998 at the age of 68
    • He was honoured with a permanent memorial in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey in December 2011, placing him alongside figures such as Wordsworth and Betjeman

  7. Second phase of £56m link road beginspublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 23 June 2017

    Work starts today on phase two of the Great Yorkshire Way.

    That's the link road connecting the M18 to Robin Hood Airport.

    The first section of a £56m dual carriageway linking the M18 with Robin Hood Airport officially opened last year.

    On Tuesday the airport was named "the fastest growing airport in the country" with more than one million passengers.

    Fire crews say the A57 near Todwick has now been declared safe after chemicals were found at the side of the road this morning.

    Specialist crews were called to the scene just after 08:00 and the road was closed as a precaution.

    The substances were tested before officers declared the area safe.

  9. Crane collapse victims: School pays tribute to 'lovely young man'published at 11:58 British Summer Time 23 June 2017

    Tributes have been paid to a teenager who was one of two men killed in a crane collapse at a building site in Crewe on Wednesday.

    Cheshire Police have said that 18-year-old Rhys Barker, from Castleford, died in the incident, along with 36-year-old David Newall from Bradford.

    In a statement from Airedale Academy in Castleford, Mr Barker's former school, the 18-year-old is described as "a lovely young man with his whole life ahead of him":

    Meanwhile, in a statement, Seddon Homes boss Jonathan Seddon said his company was working with the emergency services and the Heath and Safety Executive.

    "On behalf of everyone at Seddon I'd like to offer my heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of those who so tragically lost their lives."

    "At this time I cannot speculate as to the cause of this incident, but needless to say there will be a full investigation."

    More on the news that two men who died after a crane collapsed in Crewe on Wednesday were both from West Yorkshire.

    Cheshire Police have named the pair as David Newall, 36 from Bradford, and Rhys Barker, 18 from Castleford, who were both killed on a building site.

    A man who lives nearby, who only gave his name as Jason, told the BBC the crane had been lifting tools before it fell at about 16:30 on Wednesday.

    He said: "They finished the work, the crane positioned itself facing Bombardier [a haulage firm]. The guys finished their work and they were still up there when all of a sudden, it slowly just started to tilt, tilt tilt."

    "Guys started shouting and it completely fell on the floor," he added.

    Two men who died after a crane collapsed on a building site in Crewe on Wednesday were from West Yorkshire, police have said.

    David Newall, 36, from Bradford and Rhys Barker, 18, from Castleford were killed as they were working at the building site on Dunwoody Way.

    An eyewitness said the crane "slowly started tilting" before it fell, crushing them.

    The construction site belonged to Seddon Homes. Its chief executive said he could not speculate as to the cause of the incident.

    Residents of a Leeds street couldn't believe the size of the truck used to recover an unregistered mini-quad bike which had been illegally ridden around the area.

    West Yorkshire Police came across it in Harehills where the rider made off, knocking one officer from his bicycle and leaving him with minor injuries.

    Other officers were called to the scene and a 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking. He was later released pending further enquiries:

    A garden show with real "sole" opens today in Harrogate.

    It's the first day of the RHS Harlow Carr Flower Show and visitors will be given a friendly greeting by soldiers from the Dishforth-based 6 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps.

    They've been working with the RHS to run a "boot camp" for more than 600 local school pupils.

    Hundreds of decommissioned army boots have been planted up and decorated by pupils to help brighten up community spaces.

    West Yorkshire's police force faces a "massive challenge" due to a growing population but fewer officers, the county's chief constable and Police and Crime Commissioner are warning.

    The number of West Yorkshire residents per officer has risen to 493, a rise of 30% in the past 10 years, according to the statement, external by chief constable Dee Collins and PCC Mark Burns-Williamson.

    Ms Collins says: "The increasingly complex challenges of everything, from cybercrime to child sexual exploitation, is putting an added strain on resources, as is the ever-present threat of terrorism."

    She adds that she's "extremely concerned by the loss of 1,063 police officers, particularly given that neighbourhood policing is our vital bond with our many and varied communities".

    Mr Burns-Williamson has called on the government to "listen carefully and properly reinvest in policing as they provide about 80% of West Yorkshire Police’s budget".

    This is what Rotherham could look like in just three years time:

    A multiplex cinema, a hotel, and big name restaurants are all part of a major redevelopment scheme launched by Rotherham Council today.

    There'll also be 120 new apartments, a riverside park and possibly a theatre, the council says:

    The authority already owns most of the land, but needs to find enough money to cover the scheme.

    It says it's in talks with private developers and is also getting some funding from Sheffield City Region.

    The work is due to be completed by 2020.

    People can find out more about the plans at an exhibition in All Saints Square next Wednesday.

  18. 'Footprints forever': Stained glass window gift for Katie Rough's familypublished at 09:47 British Summer Time 23 June 2017

    The parents of killed York seven-year-old Katie Rough have been surprised by the gift of a stained glass window made in their daughter's honour.

    Katie was found fatally injured in York in January.

    The window was presented to the family at a ceremony in York's Museum Gardens and features a squirrel, rainbow, butterflies and seven floating dandelion clocks.

    It's inscribed with the words: "A small life walked by leaving footprints in our hearts forever. Katie, this is no perfect world but you gave it a little bit more colour".

    Katie's mother, Alison, said the window was a complete surprise, and she planned to hang it in a special place at home.

    A 15-year-old girl is due to stand trial for Katie's murder in July.

    A statue of legendary Yorkshire poet Ted Hughes is due to be unveiled in Mexborough this evening.

    Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd in West Yorkshire, but spent part of his childhood in Mexborough.

    The statue unveiling marks the start of a festival dedicated to the late poet laureate, who died in 1998.

    The sculpture, by Jane Robbins, depicts the young Ted Hughes sitting and reading a book.
