  9. Hillsborough: 96th victim's family 'hugely disappointed' over charge decisionpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 29 June 2017

The family of Tony Bland, the Keighley labourer who was fatally injured during the Hillsborough disaster and died aged 22 almost four years later, have said they are "hugely disappointed" at the decision not to charge David Duckenfield with his manslaughter.

    Tony BlandImage source, Hillsborough Inquests

Ninety-six Liverpool fans were fatally injured in a crush during the FA Cup semi-final held at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium on 15 April 1989.

Yesterday, the Crown Prosecution Service announced an intention to charge Mr Duckenfield, a former chief superintendant who was match commander on the day, with 95 charges of manslaughter by gross negligence.

Prosecutors said the law at the time meant if a person died more than one year and one day after they were fatally injured, no-one could be charged in relation to their death.

In a statement, Mr Bland's family said:

    Quote Message

Whilst we are hugely disappointed with the exclusion of Tony from the manslaughter charge against David Duckenfield by the CPS, our relief for the families of the other 95 men, women and children outweigh our personal frustrations.

    Quote Message

Justice has been achieved following the inquests, when the jury returned the verdict of all 96 victims being unlawfully killed at Hillsborough, and nothing will ever change that.

    Quote Message

We will continue to support the other families on the journey for accountability, despite Tony being excluded from the prosecution of David Duckenfield.

    Quote Message

We ask you to keep Tony in your thoughts as we move on through the next process for accountability.
