  7. 999 is eighty! - All you need to knowpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 30 June 2017

    Nick Wilmshurst
    BBC Local Live, Yorkshire

Did you know that the emergency 999 number is 80-years-old today? No me neither, until I saw some interesting stats on the service.

    Standby number fans:

    • In West Yorkshire, officers get 1,100 999 calls a day
    • That can go as high as 1,700
    • On average it takes just five seconds for an operator to take your call
    • Around 15% of 999 calls are not emergencies
    • In May call handlers in West Yorkshire took a total of 35,655 emergency calls

There, I hope that's quenched your thirst for 999 facts, how about a bit of history:

    Advice
    • The service, as maths geniuses will have worked out, started on 30 June 1937
    • It was originally only available in London
    • Just a week after it was launched the first arrest after a 999 call was announced
    • Prank calls aren't new, in it's first week of the 1,336 calls made, 91 were prank calls.
    • It wasn't until after WWII that other parts of the country got a 999 service
    Quote Message

Only dial 999... if the matter is urgent; if, for instance, the man in the flat next to yours is murdering his wife or you have seen a heavily masked cat burglar peering round the stack pipe of the local bank building."
