    A fight to save one of the rarest grassland sites in the UK is under way in North Yorkshire as the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust tries to raise £175,000.

    Ashes Pasture (pictured) is nestled between the iconic peaks of Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales.

    The trust has secured a loan to buy the land, but that needs to be paid back. In the first few days of its appeal it's already raised £17,000.

    In the next few weeks, the grassland will be dotted with orchids and other flowering plants as well as buzzing bees.

    The area is also an important breeding ground for birds such as curlews (pictured) and meadow pipits. Sometimes you might event spot black grouse.

    A teenager from Barnsley has been charged with a total of 11 offences, including assault and burglary.

    The 14-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking without consent, assault and burglary.

    He's also been charged with three counts of driving while disqualified and three counts of driving without insurance.

    The boy, who lives in west Barnsley, and who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also charged with failing to stop at a collision and failing to report a collision.

    The charges relate to incidents all within Barnsley between May and June this year.

  3. Hull man arrested over theft of cash machine in North Yorkshirepublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    A man from Hull has been arrested in connection with the theft of a cash machine from a shop in North Yorkshire, last week.

    The 44-year-old man was arrested on Sunday night over the theft which took place at the Co-operative store in Hunmanby, near Filey, on Friday.

    The stolen cash machine has been recovered from the village of Burton Fleming, in East Yorkshire, along with a stolen white Tata pick-up, police say.

    The arrested man has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

    Anyone with more information about the theft is being asked to contact police.

    Members of the family of one of the Leeds victims of the Manchester terror attack say they've been left "heartbroken" by her death.

    Sorrell Leczkowski, from Adel, was among those who died when a suicide bomber attacked concertgoers at the Manchester Arena last month.

    On the day of her funeral, members of Sorrell's family have issued a statement thanking everyone who has supported them.

    In the statement they say: "Sorrell will always be remembered for her love of life and her hopes and dreams for the future.

    "Our hearts are broken but the love and thoughts of so many people from the local community and beyond is thoughtful and extremely comforting.

    "Sorrell was only 14, but she was our rock, she kept us all grounded. She was such a clever, talented, creative girl, there was nothing she couldn’t do."

  5. Witness appeal for information after man hit by carpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 3 July 2017

    Police are appealing for information after a pedestrian was left seriously hurt after being hit by a car in Brighouse last month.

    It happened at about 16:55 on Thursday 22 June when the 57-year-old man was hit by a white Mercedes A-class car on Highfield Avenue, Bailiff Bridge.

    The driver of the Mercedes remained at the scene.

    Enquiries are continuing and anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision and witnessed what took place is asked to contact police.

    Plans to develop a new mental health hospital in the Harrogate area have been put on hold because of financial pressures.

    The decision has been made by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys Trust, which runs mental health services for the area, and NHS Harrogate and Rural District Clinical Commissioning Group.

    A full review of options for developing a mental health service for adults and older people is going to be carried out before any discussions about a new hospital take place.

    Bradford Coroner's Office is appealing for relatives of Colin Jefferies to get in touch.

    Mr Jefferies, who was 72, passed away at his home address in Romford Court, Bradford on 28 June.

    He died of natural causes.

    It's after a resident in Westbourne Gardens was woken up between 02:30 and 03:30 last Monday, to find a man reaching into an open window.

    When they screamed, the man ran off.

    Police are reminding people to keep their windows and doors closed and locked overnight.

    A clinical trial looking at how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) could help breast cancer patients reduce the impact of hot flushes is to begin in York.

    Common side-effects of breast cancer treatment are hot flushes and night sweats. HRT, which is normally used to treat them, can't be used for anyone on chemotherapy or anti-hormone drugs.

    York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of six hospitals taking part in the trial which is being funded by Breast Cancer Now.

    The researchers will evaluate the impact of CBT on the women’s hot flushes and night sweats after 26 weeks. In addition, group CBT sessions will be recorded and analysed by independent psychologists, to assess its effectiveness when delivered by breast cancer nurses.

    If you're being treated for Breast Cancer you can ask to be considered to take part in the trial.

    Police officers in West Yorkshire will be asked by the Police Federation if they'd like to carry a Taser or a gun.

    Its part of a survey launched by West Yorkshire Police Federation, external to see if they would be willing to carry a sidearm or carry a Taser with the aim of keeping both themselves and the public safer.

    The survey gives rank and file officers the opportunity to have their views heard and will also ask them how they think policing would change if they were armed.
