  2. Fine for Bradford landlord of 'slum' flatspublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

A Bradford landlord who allowed his tenants to live in conditions that were likened to a slum and in conditions that were described as disgraceful has been fined almost £13,000.

Hasan Kazi, 67, of Laisteridge Lane, was the manager of a block of 11 flats at 61 to 63 Ashgrove, near Bradford University.

In July last year an Environmental Health Officer inspected the flats, ten of which were occupied, and found that fire exits were blocked, a smoke detector was hanging off the ceiling and there was an exposed electrical socket.

There were also "numerous holes" around the filthy property which were allowing rats to come inside. Bradford Magistrates said that the property looked like a slum and the conditions were disgraceful.

    Quote Message

In this case, not only was the property in a bad state it also put the lives of residents at risk."

    Cllr Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council

Police successfully closed town centre venue Shooters Bar on Silver Street recently.

    Quote Message

Incidents at this pub have presented quite a demand for the local police and it’s vital that we have time to assess the current situation in more detail so that I can ensure the continued safety of everybody who works or visits Cantley Lodge."

  6. Cop a load of thispublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

    Oli Constable
    BBC Local Live, Yorkshire

I find there's something therapeutic about washing the car.

In fact, I used to wash my parents' cars for a little bit of extra pocket money.

But it looks like this seven-year-old in Sheffield got a bigger job than she bargained for!

When South Yorkshire Police took her up on the offer of a quick spruce up, they turned up in something a bit bigger than a car.

I hope they paid her more than 50p! Can't fault her for giving it a go, though.

A village pub near Ripon's been saved thanks to local campaigners.

Plans had been submitted to knock down the Henry Jenkins in Kirkby Malzeard and build new houses instead.

    Henry Jenkins

The pub is named after Henry Jenkins, who was said to have been born in 1501 and lived to the age of 169.

It's been closed for years with owners unable to find a buyer and was put forward for demolition in February.

Campaigners, arguing against the plans, said it was of historical importance to the village and set up a series of protests to demonstrate its worth.

Harrogate Council's now listed the pub as an Asset Of Community Value.

The unit now has more specialist beds for sick children, more cubicals and privacy for patients it's hoped the work will reduce waiting times.

The project has taken four months to complete and is part of a wider multi-million pound modernisation plan at the hospital.

  14. Bishops urged to ditch 'silly' headgearpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

First MPs are told they don't have to wear ties, now the Church of England discusses getting rid of Bishops mitres - those tall hats that scream out Bishop!

Reverend Dr Ian Paul, is a member of the Archbishops' Council which is holding a debate today, at the York Minster General Synod gathering, about changes to clergy clothing.

He is not a fan of the mitre and says they make Bishops seem distant and "silly."

Here's his list of three things he doesn't like about the pointy headgear:

  15. Sheffield climbers raise £35,000 for charitypublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

Dan completed the challenge in memory of his dad Adrian Hart and aunty, Alison Hart and Calvin in memory of his mum Kelsey Marsland who lost her battle with cancer in 2015.

It took the pair four and a half days to reach the summit.

    Quote Message

We were both incredibly emotional when we reached the top, we felt very close to our loved ones and both shed a few tears – I scattered some of Mum’s ashes, so there’s a little bit of Stocksbridge which will always be in Kilimanjaro.”

  16. No fire extinguishers in parts of dementia care home, say CQCpublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

Holme House residential care home in Gomersal in West Yorkshire has been placed in special measures, after an inadequate rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors say they saw residents eating food like baked beans and scrambled eggs with their fingers and not living in a way which maintained their dignity.

They also say there were no fire extinguishers available on some parts of the service, cleaning materials were stored in an unlocked cupboard and there were not enough suitably qualified staff on duty, putting people at risk.

    Quote Message

We inspected this home in October last year and told them where they needed to improve. It is disappointing that there has been a lack of action taken since the previous inspection, and also worrying that we found fresh concerns."

    Debbie Westhead, Care Quality Commission

  17. Watch: Concerns children at risk from new phone location mappublished at 09:56 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

There's growing concern that children in North Yorkshire are being put at risk by using a new phone app.

Snapchat's latest maps feature, Snap Map, lets users share their exact location.

Schools, North Yorkshire Police and now North Yorkshire County Council have all issued safeguarding warnings to parents.

Here's why schools in North Yorkshire have been asking parents to check up on their children's privacy settings:

In a statement, Snap said: "The safety of our community is very important to us and we want to make sure that all Snapchatters, parents and educators have accurate information about how the Snap Map works."

The company stressed that location sharing on Snap Map was off by default, was an opt-in feature and could be switched off at any time.

  18. Horse power help for Calder Valley flood defencespublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

A working horse has been moving tree trunks to be used for natural flood management.

The horse called Nathan took part in the efforts to prevent flooding in the Calder Valley, West Yorkshire.

A team of volunteers worked at Hardcastle Crags to use the timber to slow the flow of water down into the valley.

The work is to reduce the risk of flooding in Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd and Brighouse.

Adrian Horton, of environmental charity Slow the Flow, said: "Nathan is huge and by moving very large tree trunks he reduces the need to use concrete to slow the water down."

The timber is placed into the brooks and gullies on the crags to slow the progress of rainwater heading into the valley bottom.

In December 2015 the Calder Valley suffered the most significant floods in recent times.

More than 2,700 homes and 4,400 businesses were flooded all along the valley.

  19. Recalculating! Great Yorkshire visitors urged not to use satnavspublished at 09:37 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

If you're one of the 130,000 people thinking of heading to the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate this week you're being urged not to follow your sat-nav.

    Sat nav

Event organisers say if you do, you may end up being directed onto a route with temporary restrictions instead.

A message on the show's website reads: "Please follow the signed routes to the Show on your approach to Harrogate and do not rely on satellite navigation systems as these may direct you onto a route with limited access or temporary restrictions."
