    A string of classic Yorkshire movies have been named among the top 50 best British films of all time.

    Sheffield-based The Full Monty, external just missed out on being named the number one, claiming runners-up spot behind classic crime caper The Italian Job while Barnsley-set Kes, which tells the tale of a young boy and his pet kestrel made number 39.

  2. 'Real concerns' for missing Vietnamese girlspublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    Police have say they have real concerns for the welfare of two missing teenagers from York who were brought into the UK illegally.

    The girls, who are both of Vietnamese origin, were living in North Yorkshire and were last seen near York Minster on Sunday.

    Thi Phan, 15, and 14-year-old Tram Le, had been in the UK for some months and were in local authority care.

    North Yorkshire Police said the girls had gone into the city and had left the care of their foster parents. Ch Insp Allan Westcott said the girls had got into a taxi and left the city apparently of their own volition.

    The Environment Secretary says that the government is committed to supporting the farming industry in Yorkshire post Brexit.

    Michael Gove is at the Great Yorkshire Show today, his first visit to the annual event after taking up his new role.

    Speaking to BBC Look North said he will be doing "everything he can" to ensure that the region gets the best from the deal.

  4. Ann Maguire inquest: Family launch review over evidencepublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    The family of teacher Ann Maguire, who was murdered by a 15-year-old student in 2014 has challenged a coroner's decision not to call other pupils who had contact with the killer as witnesses at a her inquest.

    Nick Armstrong, counsel, told the court it was the only occasion on which a teacher had been killed by a pupil in a British classroom and the family were anxious "that all the lessons that can be learned from this enormous tragedy are learned".

    Mr Armstrong said it was a matter "of very substantial and current public interest" at a time when there were reports of a "spike" in the number of knives in schools.

    In November 2016, a report by Leeds Safeguarding Children Board said no-one could have predicted or prevented Mrs Maguire's murder.

  5. Police appeal following newsagent robbery in Sheffieldpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    South Yorkshire Police have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in relation to a robbery at a newsagent in Sheffield.

    It's believed the crime took place at around 22:00 on Saturday 12 March at L&C Bedford News on Galsworthy Road in Shirecliffe where a man, reportedly armed with a gun made threats to staff.

    Although no one was hurt, cash and alcohol was taken and any information can be passed onto the police via 101.

    The University of Sheffield has been given permission to build a new £45m department on one of its existing sites.

    Sheffield City Council have approved plans for the four-storey social sciences building on the university's artificial football pitch on Northumberland Road.

    The finished complex will include a research hub, three lecture theatres, cafes and parking which will put a range of their social science departments under one roof for the first time.

    This announcement follows approval plans earlier this week for a new sports centre on their main campus.

    A group of bikers from Rotherham have ridden to the Samuel Smith's Brewery in Tadcaster in protest after claiming they've being barred from one of its pubs.

    They say The Royal Oak in Ulley has banned all bikers from the site but the reason isn't clear.

    The bikers say they're being discriminated against, although the law says the ban is legal.

    The BBC has made repeated requests for a comment from Samuel Smith's Brewery but as yet the corporation has received no response from the company.

    A man and woman have been stabbed in Huddersfield by a masked gang.

    It happened in Larch Road in the Paddock area of the town just before midnight.

    A 30-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were taken to hospital with serious "life-changing" injuries.

    Police say that they want to hear from people who may have seen what happened and anyone who saw a group of men leaving the area in a white vehicle.

  10. Did you see distressed woman?published at 11:58 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    Police are appealing for information following a suspicious incident in Leeds.

    At 00:06 on Tuesday police received a number of reports of a woman who appeared distressed with a man in a car which was beeping its horn in Woodhall Road, Calverley, near to the junction with Oastler Road.

    The car, which was described as being possibly a silver Vauxhall Astra or Corsa, then sped off with the woman along Woodhall Road towards Thornbury.

    Detectives are continuing enquiries to identify the people and the vehicle involved 

    Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds District CID, said: "The people who contacted us were understandably concerned about the welfare of the woman involved and we are carrying out enquiries to trace the vehicle and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

    "We have not had any missing person reports or other concern calls that match to this incident.

    "It may be that there is an explanation for what people saw and we would ask that the people involved or anyone with any information that could assist the investigation contact us immediately."

    A Burberry factory that was planned for Leeds has been cast into doubt after the fashion retailer has allowed its lease on the historical Temple Works building to lapse.

    Burberry had planned to set up a £50m trench coat plant at the Grade I-listed building, creating 200 jobs.

    It has emerged that the group has decided that it would be too expensive to renovate the building and it's understood that they are assessing whether to build a new factory or scrap the idea.

    The company reported a 3% increase in retail sales to £478m in the three months to 30 June, while like-for-like sales rose 4%.

    I'm at Doncaster Rovers's Keepmoat Stadium today where the People's Powerhouse is taking place.

    It's an alternative to the Northern Powerhouse conferences that have taken place and has been organised by Jo Miller from Doncaster Metropolitan Council.

    The event is aimed at women rather than men, after a similar conference in Manchester was criticised for its lack of female speakers.

    If you live in Leeds, you'll spend almost two days a year looking for somewhere to leave your car according to new research.

    In fact the city is the third worst place in the country for time wasted while trying to park, only London and Belfast are worse.

    Traffic information company Inrix came up with the figures. They say that trying to park up costs the typical motorist £733 in wasted time and fuel.

    So there we have it, someone has confirmed what we all knew; parking in big cities is a right pain in the bumper.

    Two Yorkshire players are in the England Women's team taking on New Zealand in the Women's World Cup at Derby.

    Katherine Brunt and Lauren Winfield are both in the XI, in what will be a tough game against one of the bookies favourites to win the competition.

    England, though, can take confidence from Sunday's three run victory over the current world champions Australia and a win today will confirm the host's semi final spot.

    There's been another drop in unemployment in Yorkshire.

    Figures for March to May show the number of people out of work in our region has gone down by 9,000 to a 130,000.

    Nationally, unemployment has fallen by 64,000, to 1.49m.

    The 50th anniversary of Leeds' world-famous West Indian Carnival will be marked by a special city council meeting later.

    All 99 councillors are expected to be in the Civic Hall for the meeting, which will welcome carnival founders Arthur France and Ian Charles.

    The council wants to recognise the carnival's lasting legacy and how it's helped put Leeds onto the world stage.

    Sheffield based radio station Iman FM have been told that they could be investigated by the police after the community radio station in Attercliffe had its licence suspended by regulator Ofcom after broadcasting hate speeches by a radical Muslim cleric.

    The radio station continues to work with Ofcom to try to resolve the issues which led to the licence being taken from them.
