  1. Leeds diving coach to be honoured by universitypublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    The diving coach from Leeds who took Team GB to Olympic success in Rio 2016 is to be awarded an Honorary Doctorate at Leeds Beckett University.

    Ady Hinchliffe was Head Coach for the City of Leeds Diving Club, which is now home to six of the current British podium divers.

    He held his role for more than 20 years and his leadership saw divers Jack Laugher and Chris Mears take gold for Team GB in Rio in 2016.

    He will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Sport Science on 28 July, for his world-class services to sport coaching.

    Earlier, we brought you news of delays for train services heading from Sheffield to stations towards London this morning.

    A broken down train at around 07:30 this morning, just south of Sheffield station, was causing significant delays but live departure boards are no longer showing any additional journey time for passengers bound for the capital.

    There are still some minor delays on Northern Rail services between Barnsley and Sheffield due to vandalism in the Meadowhall area.

    Meanwhile trains moving from Derbyshire into South Yorkshire have also now returned to normal.

    Councillors in Rotherham are debating today whether they should support the idea of 16 and 17 year olds being able to vote.

    It's after a motion about this subject was put forward by the town's youth cabinet, with an eventual plan that they can lobby the government to bring the age down from 18.

    It turns out half of Yorkshire people take their own tea bags on holiday - with a quarter admitting they bring their slippers with them.

    There'll be an update this morning on the number of people in Yorkshire who're out of work.

    Last month's figures showed a slight drop of 5,000 in unemployment in our region.

    Nationally, the total number of people without a job fell to 1.53 million.

    Choosing the best pub in Yorkshire is an unenviable task, but someone's got to do it and if you live in Ampleforth in North Yorkshire it's worth celebrating:

    The White Swan has been named as the region's best pub by Welcome to Yorkshire in a public vote.

    Celebrity chef Brian Turner was there to hand out the award at the Great Yorkshire Show yesterday, with a record number of votes, 18,500 in total, being cast.

    North Yorkshire boozers did very well, with The Royal Oak in Ripon coming second and The Carpenter’s Arms in Felixkirk in third place.

    A West Yorkshire hospice is helping raise the standard of care of terminally ill people across the country.

    St Gemma's in Leeds has been formally recognised as the UK's first University Teaching Hospice.

    It's a partnership between the organisation and the University of Leeds and means that there are more experts on hand to improve patient care.

    A broken down train just south of Sheffield railway station is contributing to delays on services towards London.

    Live departure boards are showing trains departing from Sheffield to the capital are running behind schedule throughout the morning rush hour and there are also delays towards Sheffield from Chesterfield and Dronfield stations.

    The family of murdered school teacher Ann Maguire begin a High Court Challenge later today.

    Ann's husband, Don, children and nephews are challenging a coroner's decision not to call other pupils as witnesses at the inquest into her death.

    The family was given permission in May to challenge the decision not to call pupils made by Assistant West Yorkshire Coroner Kevin McLoughlin.

    Mrs Maguire was stabbed to death by student Will Cornick, who was 15 at the time, at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds in April 2014.

    He was jailed for life and ordered to serve at least 20 years.

    Mrs Maguire's inquest is due to begin in November.

  15. Civil injunctions against Sheffield tree protesterspublished at 06:58 British Summer Time 12 July 2017

    Sheffield Council will today apply for civil injunctions against 17 people from the city who have taken part in demonstrations against the authority's tree felling programme.

    The City Council says it's been left with no choice but to start legal proceedings against people who continue to take direct action against the removal of street trees by the council's contractors Amey.

    Earlier this year 14 people were arrested for taking part in these protests - but the Crown Prosecution Service later dropped all the charges.

    It would prevent people from taking part in further direct action to stop tree felling or encouraging others to do so.

    A boy from Wakefield has died after a suffering a head injury in an under-14s rugby league match.

    Stanley Rangers RLFC said Evan Hawksworth was injured during a game on Sunday against Batley Boys.

    The club said: "It is with the deepest regret that Stanley Rangers announce the tragic passing of their under-14s player Evan Hawksworth.

    Evan's father, Gary Hawksworth, said: "Evan passed away playing the game he loved".
