    A teenager who battered a 53-year-old man with a hammer and a knife in an "unprovoked attack" has been sentenced to life for his murder.

    Daniel Thomas Reed "smashed his way" into Shaun Skelton's flat on Holgate Road, in York, before attacking him on 5 March, North Yorkshire Police said.

    He was later seen wandering the city's streets with blood on his hands after the killing.

    The 19-year-old, of no fixed address, initially denied murder but admitted the charge at Leeds Crown Court earlier. He was told he must serve a minimum of 24 years.

    Barnsley fans have been in East Finchley, London today cleaning up the grave site of of the club's founder Tiverton Preedy.

    Preedy was a clergyman with a particular interest in using sport to improve moral values.

    A 23-year-old man's recovering from serious injuries in hospital - after he came off his motorbike in Huddersfield.

    The incident occurred in the early hours of this morning at about 00:55 on Woodhead Road, near Taylor Hill as a silver bike was travelling towards Huddersfield.

    Officers are appealing for, external anyone who may have been in the area and seen the motorcycle travelling before the incident.

  7. Concern over plans to by South Yorkshire police to use spit hoodspublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    The civil rights group Liberty has questioned plans by South Yorkshire Police to use spit hoods when transporting offenders or people under arrest.

    The Police Federation says the hoods are the simplest way to stop officers from being spat on, which it says happens on average eight or nine times a week. Other options it claims would require further restraint.

    But Corey Stoughton from Liberty says using spit hoods can cost lives:

  8. Leeds Contemporary Singers win BBC Pitch Battle finalpublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Leeds Contemporary Singers have won the final of Pitch Battle.

    The nine-piece from Leeds saw off some strong competition from the other groups. LCS have been battling it out over six weeks and showed they had what it takes to go the distance.

    LCS wont come back to Leeds with just a trophy, they've also won £50,000 to put towards their passion for singing.

  9. M1 lorry fire picture reveals extent of blazepublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    This dramatic picture has emerged of the lorry fire which closed the M1 north between Chesterfield and Sheffield earlier today.

    Highways England has now reopened two of the four lanes but there are still lengthy tailbacks.

    Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and the police were called at about 10:10 to a 40 tonne lorry which caught fire.

  10. Top bombing! Organisers needed for Sheffield fundraiserpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    The Macmillan cancer charity is hoping to find new volunteers to take on the organisation of the World Water Bombing Championships in Sheffield .

    The fundraiser, which last took place in 2015, involves teams of four putting on fancy dress and launching themselves from the 3m diving platform. They are then graded based on their style, splash and presentation by a judging panel which includes Macmillan nurses.

    Thousands of people pulled on their wellies at the weekend for the Deer Shed Festival near Thirsk in North Yorkshire.

    It's known as a family festival, filled with poetry, comedy, science and music.

    I was one of the people who endured the 12-hours of rain Friday night and eight hours Saturday night.

    But my spirits weren't dampened - especially when I found a guitar made from an old cigar box!

    Just call me Blues Boy Barton from now on!

    A top stand-up comedian is one of the star attractions at this year’s action-packed Saltaire Festival, external.

    Justin Moorhouse, who appeared in TV sitcom Phoenix Nights, will perform at a comedy night held at the Caroline Social Club, on Wednesday13 September.

    The ten-day event will take place across the village between Friday 8 September 8 and Sunday 17 September.

  13. Children's Food Trust charity to close after funding stopspublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    A national charity, which is based in Sheffield and aims to improve children's health and nutrition, is to close at the end of September.

    The Children's Food Trust (CFT) has been providing cookery courses and nutritional advice in schools and nurseries in England, Wales and Scotland for more than 10 years.

    A lack of funding has forced it to shut with the loss of 47 jobs, 31 of those in Sheffield, the charity says.

    Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson said it was "very sad news".

  14. Sheffield lifeboat comes homepublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    The National Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield welcomed its newest exhibit today, the City of Sheffield Lifeboat.

    Weighing in at 26 tons, the lifeboat saved 650 lives in a fifteen year career that started in 1989.

    She started out at Whitby Lifeboat Station, serving at Ramsgate, Hartlepool and Sennen Cove before finding her permanent home at Poole in 2001.

    Still in complete working order visitors will be able to board the awe-inspiring vessel and get an an appreciation of its incredible career.

  15. Glazing to cover York Minster's medieval windowspublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    More details have been released about an £11m campaign to save Minster's stained glass windows.

    The cathedral holds the largest collection of medieval stained glass in the country.

    The irreplaceable glass has withstood hundreds of years of wind and rain, but condensation means it's deteriorating faster than anyone had predicted.

    Now the majority of the Minster's glass is going to be weather-proofed with UV resistant glazing, because condensation and corrosion is causing the medieval paint to flake away.

    The project will take 20 years and will be paid for with a fundraising campaign and lottery funding.

    Currently 74 out of 128 stained glass windows are exposed to the elements and subject to corrosion and decay.

    A grant of up to £1m from the HLF will match every pound raised by the public and YMF.

    About 60 lambs have been stolen near Harrogate.

    Police say the theft happened some time between last Thursday and Friday in the Lofthouse area.

    It comes after another 10 lambs were taken that same week, also in the Harrogate area, this time near Beckwithshaw.

    The team is headed up by the University of Sheffield and is entering a fourth week at the trench in Little Carlton.

    The team is trying to answer some of the remaining big questions about how people lived in the era.

    This is the aftermath of the lorry fire that's caused major delays on the M1 northbound between junctions 29a for Chesterfield and 30 for Sheffield.

    Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is still dealing with pockets of the fire within the load area of the lorry.

    Highways England has said the motorway is expected to clear by 17:30 this evening.

  20. Woman sexually assaulted in Dewsburypublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    A woman, pushing a baby in a pram, has been sexually assaulted in Dewsbury. Police say it happened in Crow Nest Park 8 days ago.

    The 31-year-old managed to escape after her attacked made inappropriate remarks and indecently touched her.

    The suspect is described as Asian, aged between 30 and 35 and wearing all black clothing.
