    Pet owners have been, external warned to be alert after a spate of animal thefts were reported across South Yorkshire.

    Police in Doncaster are urging pet owners to check their home security measures after a series of reported animal thefts across the town.

    In one burglary, 13 pug dogs were stolen.

    In a separate attempted burglary that was reported to police thieves targeted a property where there were a number of pug puppies inside the property.

    A teenager has been jailed for 24 years for the murder of 53-year-old man.

    The body of Shaun Skelton (pictured above) was discovered at a flat in Chancery House, on Holgate Road, York, in March, with "significant injuries".

    Daniel Thomas Reed, 19, of no fixed abode, had initially denied murder, but admitted the charge at Leeds Crown Court.

    He was jailed for life and told he must serve a minimum of 24 years in prison.

    Stones left over from the collapse of the town's bridge during flooding in 2015 re being removed from the riverbed.

    It will allow the River Wharfe to flow more smoothly and the stones will be used elsewhere.

    The M1 remains shut after a 40 tonne lorry caught fire on the northbound carriageway earlier.

    Highways England said the motorway between junctions 29a for Chesterfield and 30 for south Sheffield is expected to be closed until about 14:15 today.

    Traffic is also slow heading south because of the fire.

    Fire crews from Clowne and Staveley fire stations are at the scene with Derbyshire Police.

    They were called at about 10:10 to reports of the lorry fire on the motorway hardshoulder.

    Barnsley Youth Choir has triumphed on the international stage, winning both of two categories the team of 62 entered at the European Choir Games in Latvia.

    It makes them European champions in the Gospel, Spiritual, Music of Spirit and Faith category, as well as the Jazz, Pop, Show category. They were also asked to compete in the Grand Prix of Nations contests and won both of those too.

    Names are being sought for the great-great-great grand'kids' of Daisy the pygmy goat at Easingwold’s Maize Maze in North Yorkshire.

    The twins are just a few days old.

    Their great-great-grandmother, a super nanny, was famous for being the second oldest pygmy goat, when she died aged 19, earlier this year.

    North Yorkshire police have arrested two teenage boys in connection with the vandalism of heritage railway carriages used in the filming of TV drama Downton Abbey.

    The 17-year-olds have been arrested and released while under investigation.

    Police say they expect to make further arrests as enquiries continue.

    A BBC Investigation has found that animal rescues cost our fire service in West Yorkshire more than £100,000 in the past three years.

    The most common animals that were rescued were cats, dogs, birds and horses, but other animals involved included snakes, seals, bats, chinchillas, iguanas, and a raccoon.

  11. Two teenagers seriously injured in crash near Keighleypublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Two teenagers are in hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the A629 at Steeton, Keighley.

    The crash happened in the early hours of Sunday morning morning. The car left the road and hit a lampost.

    The 18-year-old male driver of the car suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to hospital, where he remains today, along with a 16-year-old female, who suffered serious head and pelvic injuries.

    An online appeal set up to help pay for repairs needed following thousands of pounds worth of damage to heritage railway carriages used in the filming of TV drama Downton Abbey.

    Eight teak carriages on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in Pickering had windows smashed, with furniture and fixings also ruined at the weekend.

    Fire extinguishers were also set off throughout the carriages, soaking the furniture and wall fittings.

    The railway said the full extent of the damage was not yet known, but repair costs would run "into the thousands if not more".

    An appeal set up following the incident has raised just over £19,000 in under 24 hours.

    Almost 500 people have donated cash so far, some of them hundreds of pounds.

    Highways England says that traffic is being held northbound J29A and J30 after the lorry fire.

    The low cost airline Ryanair, which operates flights from Leeds Bradford Airport, says its seen a 55% increase in profits in the three months to June.

    It says the figures cover the timing of the Easter holiday.

    The company said it expects annual profits to be in the region of €1.4bn, but this is contingent on Brexit developments and the absence of further terror attacks, as well as more standard variables such as the number of people booking summer holidays.

    A council property in the Ferham area of Rotherham has been closed for three months after concerns it was being used to deal drugs.

    Officers and other agencies were granted the order by the courts to close the house, on Dovercourt Road, following concerns raised by residents.

    The house is the first in Rotherham to be closed for suspected drug issues under the Antisocial Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014.

    North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses following "significant criminal damage" on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

    Overnight, between 10:00 on Saturday and 07:00 on Sunday windows on seven train carriages at Pickering Train Station were smashed.

    Police say the inside of the carriages were then "trashed."

    Inspector Martin Dennison said: “There is understandably a feeling of anger and outrage amongst the community and police are determined to find those responsible and bring them to justice."

    Nearly 3,000 people have now signed a petition opposing plans to close the ticket office at York Railway Station and replace it with self-service machines.

    New shops and a first class lounge are also included in the proposals.

    Virgin East Coast Trains say people will still be able to buy tickets directly from their staff through their new customer zone.

    South Yorkshire Police are planning to issue their officers spit guards.

    The force says their officers are spat at, on average, nine times a week, by members of the public.

    The plan is to issue spit guards, from the start of next year.

    They won't be used by police on the beat, only in custody centres or when offenders are being moved around.
