  1. 'Downton Abbey' railway carriages ruined by vandalspublished at 08:55 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Vandals have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to heritage railway carriages used in the filming of TV drama Downton Abbey.

    Eight teak carriages on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in Pickering had windows smashed, with furniture and fixings also ruined.

    The carriages, dating from 1930 to 1950, have regularly been featured in films and television, the railway said.

    North Yorkshire Police is investigating the attack.

    Fire extinguishers were also set off throughout the carriages, soaking the furniture and wall fittings.

    The railway said the full extent of the damage was not yet known, but repair costs would run "into the thousands if not more".

    What is thought to be one of Britain's first robots now lives in an army surplus store in Leeds.

    Tinker the Robot was built in the 1960s by Dennis Weston and was used to carry out daily tasks like cleaning, vacuuming and washing the car via remote control.

    After Dennis' death, his friend Barry Johnson was given Tinker and promised never to sell it.

    Mr Johnson, who runs Johnsons of Leeds in Stourton, said: "He was an inventor.

    "He could sit in his control room and send it walking up and down the street."

  4. Arrest after Sheffield shootingpublished at 08:12 British Summer Time 24 July 2017

    Police have now arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder, after a shooting in Sheffield.

    A 19-year-old man was shot on Longley Avenue West in Shirecliffe on Friday teatime, he is still hospital in a serious but stable condition.

    The arrested man is in police custody and South Yorkshire Police are continuing their investigation.

    A care home in Leeds says hens are helping people cope with feelings of isolation and depression.

    Nestfield Lodge is part of a nationwide project called Henpower, which encourages residents to care for chickens.

    Studies show the project reduces the need for medication and improves well-being.

    The railway route between Liverpool and Newcastle may not be fully electrified despite a promise by the previous government.

    In 2015, the Department for Transport said electrification of the whole link - which goes through Manchester, Leeds and York, external - would be complete by 2022.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has since said electrification will instead be used "where it makes a difference".

    Shadow rail minister and York Central Labour MP, Rachael Maskell, has called it "a slap in the face".

    In an interview with the Daily Telegraph,, external Mr Grayling said: "We are not abandoning electrification, what we are doing is using electrification where it makes a difference.

    "What we've got on the railways is technology we didn't have five or six years ago."

    Signs of blood have been found on items recovered by police searching for missing Sheffield toddler Ben Needham.

    Human blood has reportedly been found on a toy car and sandal believed to have belonged to the toddler.

    Ben was 21 months old when he disappeared on the Greek island of Kos in July 1991 - 26-years-ago today.

    South Yorkshire Police said forensic work was being carried out in Aberdeen to try to extract DNA from the items.

    Det Insp Jon Cousins said the development "corroborates and strengthens" the theory Ben died in an accident near to where he disappeared.

    Police are investigating after a car crashed into the doors of the Hilton Hotel in Leeds, ending up in the foyer.

    The driver suffered minor injuries and was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving last night.

    No-one outside or nearby was injured in the incident.
