  4. Film shows life along the Yorkshire coast over the last 100 yearspublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    A film that charts life along the Yorkshire coast over the last 100 years is to be shown across the region.

    The Yorkshire Film Archive collection of coastal films shows seaside activities from almost every decade of the last century.

    It will be shown in Scarborough later this week, then Bridlington next month.

    Marcel, a nightjar from the Humberhead Peatlands near Doncaster is still looking for love after a tour around the UK failed to find him a mate.

    The University of York researchers tracking the behaviour of the threatened birds were amazed to see how Bird 16840 went on an odyssey around the UK after failing to find a partner locally.

    They had no idea that he had been on such an adventure until we downloaded the GPS tag data.

    The bird first flew south to Cambridgeshire, then over to Norfolk before heading to Milton Keynes, the Severn Valley and Birmingham.

    He then headed home but has still not found his mate with only a few weeks of the breeding season still to go.

    He's been named Marcel after a Love Island contestant.

    Organisers of this year's Scarborough Cricket Festival say they've lost up to £25,000.

    The tournament came to an abrupt end yesterday, when Yorkshire were beaten after only two days play, in their County Championship game against Essex at North Marine Road.

    The Festival was due to last four days.

    Chairman of Scarborough Cricket Club Bill Mustoe says the festival is a huge team effort and everyone is disappointed. He also mentions there's a few uneaten buns left over:

  7. Leeds festival organiser launches scheme to boost number of female recording artistspublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    Festival Republic, which is behind the Leeds Festival, has launched a new project to help boost the number of female recording artists in the UK.

    As part of the new initiative bands with a mainly female line-up, or female solo artists, will get the chance to have a week's studio time.

    It's after controversy about the lack of female performers and headline acts at some of Britain's biggest festivals.

    The three-year project called ReBalance will be based in Leeds.

  8. One hundred years of Yorkshire's coast on filmpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    A film which charts life along the Yorkshire coast over the last 100 years will be shown at various venues over the next few weeks.

    The Yorkshire Film Archive will reveal the collection of coastal films that span almost every decade of the last century.

    It will be shown at the Scarborough Art gallery on 10 August and move to other venues.

    A 27-year-old man is being treated in hospital after he was hit by a car on Claypit Lane, external at Rawmarsh in Rotherham on Sunday at around 18:00.

    The driver then made off. Police are appealing for witnesses.

    Sometimes we let you know about exercises that the fire brigade are doing around Yorkshire so you don't panic and think that something real is going on.

    Dramatic signs are going up in Scarborough, Filey and Whitby to deter visitors from feeding seagulls.

    Herring Gulls have gained a notorious reputation in recent years for their opportunistic attacks for food, especially when raising their chicks.

    This behaviour has been exacerbated by people feeding the gulls and leaving litter and food waste on beaches, instead of making use of nearby bins.

    Lawyers working on behalf of paratrooper Ben Parkinson - who was seriously injured during a tour of duty in Afghanistan more than a decade ago - say they are investigating concerns that organisations including the Ministry of Defence are not doing enough to meet his care needs.

    Legal firm Irwin Mitchell has written to the MoD, NHS England and the Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group to ask them to explain what the firm says are gaps in his care and request that more is done to help.

  18. Meadowhall hosts Special Olympics torch runpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    The Special Olympics Torch wound is its way through the Meadowhall malls in Sheffield today en route to Bramall Lane.

    The guardian of the flame was PC Leo Hawker from South Yorkshire Police flanked by Special Olympics GB gymnasts Mary Nolan and Jessica Ward.

  19. Man found badly injured in Leeds car parkpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

    A man who is thought to be in his 20s was found badly injured in a Leeds car park this morning.

    Police have no idea who he is and are appealing for help.

    He was discovered just before 06:00 this morning at the Merrion Street car park in the city centre with head injuries - he had no mobile phone or ID on him.

    He was taken to the LGI for urgent treatment, he's still there in a critical but stable condition.

    Officers have released CCTV footage of him before he was found in a bid to try to find out what happened to him - if you can help, call West Yorkshire Police on 101.
