    Flooded telephone exchange in York

Telcoms watchdog Ofcom found KCOM broke an important rule which aims to ensure everyone can contact emergency services at all times.

In December 2015, KCOM - which operates the main phone and broadband system in Hull - notified Ofcom that its emergency call service had failed for about four hours.

Over 100 attempts to contact emergency services had failed to connect and the company blamed flooding at a BT telephone exchange on York's Stonebow in the wake of Storm Eva.

While KCOM had a back-up system, it also relied on the flooded exchange, it's emerged.

  12. Forever young: Northerners die earlier than Southernerspublished at 12:14 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

Some not-so-good news now on the mortality of us Northerners: it seems we die earlier than Southerners...

    Grave

That's the finding of a study co-authored by the University of York whose researchers say they've found a growing health divide across the country.

    North south

They're calling it A Tale of Two Englands and say research shows if you're a Northerner, you're 20% more like to die under the age of 75.

Professor Tim Doran, from the University of York, said: "These important findings were made possible by examining public health data, held by the NHS and other agencies, dating back decades."

  13. Threatened Yorkshire bird's 600 mile love odysseypublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 8 August 2017

York scientists who are following the antics of a lovelorn nightjar say the bird has travelled more than 600 miles across the UK in a quest to find a mate.

The University of York researchers, tracking the behaviour of the threatened birds on the Humberhead Peatlands near Doncaster, were amazed to see how Bird 16840 flew around the UK after failing to find a partner locally.

Dr Kathryn Arnold, said her team decided to call him Marcel - the name of a contestant on a reality TV dating show - after his GPS showed he first flew south to Cambridgeshire, then over to Norfolk before heading to Milton Keynes, the Severn Valley and Birmingham.

He then returned home, but has still not found his mate with only a few weeks of the breeding season still to go.

Dr Arnold said: "We checked and double-checked that there was no malfunction with the tag or error with the satellites, but the data is correct."

    Nightjar

The other 20 birds the team followed all stayed within a few miles of the peatlands during the breeding season.

The team are continuing their tracking in the hope that Marcel will find his match.

Nightjars, which breed in the UK on heathlands and feed on moths and flying beetles, have been in decline for many years and they are species of conservation concern.
