  1. Claim Sheffield unemployment rate higher than national averagepublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    The The Trades Union Congress (TUC) says the latest unemployment figures mask a higher rate in Sheffield.

    Earlier we reported that the number of people out of work in Yorkshire fell again in the three months to June.

    However the TUC says the unemployment rate in the city is 5.6% compared to 4.4% nationally.

    It adds that for those in work the average weekly and hourly earnings in the Sheffield city region are below the national and regional average.

  2. Warning over number of abandoned cars in Selby districtpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    Rising numbers of abandoned cars in the Selby area have prompted the district council to issue a warning.

    Selby District Council says it investigated 94 vehicles that had been left in the 12 months up to March - compared with 23 for the year before.

    It's already dealt with 33 more this year.

    The registered owner of a dumped car faces a fine of up to £2,500 and the council says abandoned vehicles act as a magnet for crime, anti-social behaviour, and arson.

    An abandoned vehicle is one that appears not to be in regular use and has been in the same place for a period of time, usually three weeks or more.

    As well as the fine, car owners can face three months imprisonment.

    Castleford Tigers are on the verge of clinching a top-of-the-table finish in Rugby League's Super League for the first time in their 91-year history

    Cas will be awarded the League Leaders' Shield tomorrow should they secure a point against West Yorkshire rivals Wakefield.

    As well as writing their names in the history books, the Tigers would also earn valuable home advantage in the play-off semi finals.

  4. Manchester bombing 'hero' denies stealing from victimspublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    A man has denied stealing from victims in the aftermath of the Manchester Arena bombing.

    Leeds schoolgirl Sorrell Leczkowski (pictured), 14, was among 22 people who died in the attack at the end of the Ariana Grande concert.

    Chris Parker, 33, of no fixed address was charged with stealing a purse and contents from Sorrell's grandmother, Pauline Healey and a mobile phone from a 14-year-old girl.

    Mr Parker was remanded in custody by Manchester and Salford Magistrates and will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on 13 September.

    North Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner has refuted claims she'd have too much power if she also oversaw the fire service.

    A consultation's going on over whether Julia Mulligan is to be given the responsibility, which would mean she'd replace the existing fire authority, consisting of 16 local councillors.

    North Yorkshire County Council's executive recommended yesterday that she be given a role on the fire service authority, but it won't support a complete take-over.

    Scarborough Art Society's annual exhibition has had to be cancelled after a lockup was targeted by thieves.

    A storage unit was stolen and other equipment was set on fire.

    The society is now searching for somewhere new to store its equipment.

  7. New Keighley police station 'will be better for town'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    The Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police says the force's station in Keighley is being relocated to make it easier for members of the public to get to.

    The current site in the town (pictured) is one of three West Yorkshire police stations being put up for sale to help save £30m over the next four years.

    The others stations are in Bingley - where the building hasn't been used since 2015 - and in Killingbeck in Leeds, where officers will be moving in with the fire brigade in a new building next door. Chief Constable Dee Collins explained why a new location will be found for the Keighley police station:

    Former deputy prime minister John Prescott is expected to come out fighting today and demand the government finally gives cities across Yorkshire a fair deal.

    The ex-Hull MP is due to speak at the Edinburgh Festival later.

    He wants to see council leaders across big northern cities put aside their differences and form a so-called "Council of the North".

    The Labour peer believes it could rival Scotland and Wales.

  9. Train's exhaust smoke to blame for 'mist' over city centrepublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    You might have seen the white cloud low over Sheffield this morning.

    It was a bit of a mystery, with the cloud smelling quite smoky, but South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said they hadn't attended a fire in the city.

    Some Twitter users have even said it had a strange smell.

    Danny Jacobs on Twitter though seems to have solved it. A diesel train leaving Sheffield station this morning around 06:00.

    The Special Olympics in Sheffield brought £1.4m to the city, according to Sheffield City Council.

    The games saw 2,600 athletes with learning disabilities compete in different sports across four days last week.

    The estimated boost to Sheffield from the games is made up of spend on accommodation, local travel and venue hire.

    Event organisers think the figure will be higher once spending in restaurants and shops are added.

    Latest figures show there was a drop of 5,000 in our region between April and June, to 179,000.

    Nationally, the number of people out of work is down by 57,000, which sees the the jobless rate down to its lowest since 1975.

    Two men have been treated in hospital for gunshot wounds after a targeted attack in Bradford.

    The men, both in their 20s, were injured last night in the in Heaton Road area close to the junction with Rose Street.

    A short time later police found a burned out car believed to be linked to the shooting.

    Officers say they say they believe it was a targeted attack and are appealing for witnesses.

  17. Watch: Local lifeboat crews to appear on new BBC2 seriespublished at 10:23 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    The work of lifeboat teams across Yorkshire is going to be featured on national television.

    Crews from Flamborough, Bridlington and Whitby among others will appear in a new 12-part BBC2 series, which starts this evening.

    Between now and November the programmes will show dramatic footage of real rescues carried out lifeboats located all round the coasts of Britain and Ireland.

  18. Pub landlord's tribute to Elvis Presleypublished at 10:15 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    Scarborough now has an official Elvis Presley fan club.

    Today marks the 40th anniversary of the death of the singer known as "The King" in 1977.

    The fan club is thought to be the only official one in North Yorkshire and one of only 400 in the world.

    It's been set up by Mark Witherington, who has loads of Elvis memorabilia at his pub, The King And Cask.

  19. Drive-by gunshot at Mexborough bar - police search for carpublished at 09:58 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    It's emerged a gunman has opened fire at the doorway of a pub in South Yorkshire.

    Police are looking for a green Mini car after a gun was fired at a bar in Mexborough near Doncaster and then the vehicle was driven off.

    Police said the driver pulled up outside Memories Sports Bar on Bank Street and a shot was fired into the doorway before the car was driven away.

    No-one was injured in the incident on Wednesday, 9 August at around 23:10 BST.

    There are concerns North Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner would have too much power if she also oversaw the county's fire service.

    County councillors yesterday objected to Julia Mulligan's proposal to disband the fire authority.

    Ms Mulligan said if she alone oversaw the fire service, money saved could go back into front line firefighters.
