    A vigil will be held in Leeds tonight in support of people affected by recent violence in the American state of Virginia.

    It comes after a woman died and 19 others were hurt when a car hit people protesting against a far-right march.

    This evening's event outside the Art Gallery has been organised by groups including Leeds Unite Against Fascism and Leeds Black Lives Matter.

    President Trump has sparked renewed controversy by again blaming both sides for the clashes between far-right and anti-racism protesters.

    The event is due to start at 17:00 BST.

    It's back-to-back away defeats in the Championship for Sheffield United as they were beaten 2-0 at Cardiff.

    Barnsley will go into Saturday's derby with the Blades on the back of their first home League win since January. They beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 at Oakwell.

    Rotherham United lost their Checkatrade trophy game 4 -2 on penalties against Manchester City under-23's side. The game was a draw at normal time.

    Two lorries and a van were involved in a crash on the M18 southbound near junction two, and this was the result.

    The driver of the van was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

    More people in West Yorkshire say they want police to carry guns on a day-to-day basis.

    The results of a Police Federation survey, which asked 6,000 people in the county for their views, show almost 70% would feel safer if officers were routinely armed.

    More on the incident at Huddersfield station earlier.

    It has emerged emergency crews were called to reports that a man, believed to be in his 40s, was stuck underneath a train.

    Crews worked to pull the man to safety and he was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary.

    The fire service said he had suffered injuries to his head, arms and shoulder but he was not thought to be in a life-threatening condition.

    It is not clear how the man got under the train, the fire service added.

    A house in Scarborough's been badly damaged by a fire that broke out in Herdborough Road just after 21.30 last night.

    All those in the property managed to get out and no-one was hurt.

    The fire service says it affected the entire ground and first floor of the property.

    Firefighters used breathing apparatus and two hoses to extinguish the blaze and are back at the scene this morning to try and work out how it started.

    A boy from Yorkshire has published his first book at just nine-years-old.

    Benedict Magnusson from Thirsk has been signing copies of "The Pig Who Wanted to Get to the Moon".

    He says he's always wanted to be a writer and has already got to work on his second book.

    A family from West Yorkshire say they've been left homeless because their home's been infested with flies, maggots and beetles.

    Beau Marr lives in Leeds with her partner, his daughter and their five-month-old baby girl.

    It began when the man living in the flat above them in Leeds died and his body wasn't discovered for weeks.

    Sanctuary Housing Association claims it's faced unavoidable delays and the family should be back in within the next few days.

    But Beau says they've been let down by the system:

    Train services in and out of Huddersfield have been disrupted by an emergency services incident.

    There's disruption on most services at the station with trains either cancelled or delayed.

    Police and ambulance services are currently on site, although British Transport Police have been unable to give further details at this stage.

    Emergency services are dealing with an incident at Huddersfield train station.

    This is causing disruption to trains through the station.

    National Rail say trains may be delayed by up to 60 minutes or cancelled.

  14. Tree campaigners to contact government minister after legal rulingpublished at 07:23 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    Campaigners fighting to stop trees being chopped down in Sheffield say they'll invite the Environment Secretary Michael Gove back to the city, to try to increase pressure to prevent more being cut down.

    Yesterday the city council were granted powers to stop protesters taking direct action such as leaving cars in the area or standing inside safety zones when work is being carried out .

    Keighley police station is being downgraded as part of plans to save money.

    It's one of three being sold off by the force in West Yorkshire which says it now has fewer staff and officers and doesn't need as much space.

    Under the plans, the current Keighley police station will shut but only once a new, smaller location's been found.

    The police say the current building is too large and no longer fit for purpose.

    Bingley police station will close too but that has not been used since 2015.

    And Killingbeck station in Leeds (pictured, above) will also shut with the officers who work there moving to the nearby fire station

  16. West Yorkshire police officers back frontline Taser callpublished at 07:06 British Summer Time 16 August 2017

    More than 90% of West Yorkshire police officers want to see Tasers routinely issued to colleagues on frontline duty, according to a new survey.

    The poll, carried out by West Yorkshire Police Federation, found 1,417 of the 1,563 officers asked backed the idea.

    A second survey of 5,939 people in the county found 86% supported the proposal.

    West Yorkshire Police said arming officers with Tasers was "not something to be taken lightly".

    Under the force's current policy, external only officers assigned to certain duties are authorised to carry a Taser and only once they have undergone the appropriate training.

    The work of the Whitby lifeboat crew is being showcased on BBC TV tonight.

    The largely volunteer group are featured in a new series, Saving Lives at Sea, highlighting the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI),

    The 12-part documentary series features real rescues carried out by the charity’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards around the UK and Ireland.

    The first episode features the Whitby crew, with a father and daughter being pulled from the sea after being swept from rocks.

    The series begins at 20:00 on BBC Two.
